POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Sophomore
Dylan Swarts hit a pair of home runs Sunday at Prentiss Field as the Union College baseball team took on Vassar College in a Liberty League doubleheader, but the Brewers swept the Garnet Chargers by scores of 15-5 (8 inn.) and 15-8.
Senior
Caleb Miller set the program record for career runs scored in the first inning of game one when he led off the game with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. It was the 111th run scored of his four-year career in Schenectady, breaking Jack Koch '21's record of 110 set six seasons earlier. Union's RBI, hits, home run, and at-bat records are all well within reach for the catcher from Rome, N.Y.
Game 1: Vassar 15, Union 5 (8 inn.)
Swarts and Miller both homered in the first game of the day for Union (6-10, 1-2 Liberty League) during the fifth inning. Vassar (5-11, 2-4 Liberty League) only led 7-5 after the pair of solo shots from the top of Union's order.
Senior Jack Klein inherited a bases-loaded situation in the next half inning with no outs. While the three runners eventually scored on his watch, they were credited to sophomore Ryan Calvario from the beginning of the frame. Klein did limit the damage and went on to pitch three innings, only allowing one run of his own.
However, Union did not record another hit after Swarts and Miller's home runs. Vassar enacted the run rule in the eighth inning, scoring three times without an out.
Game 2: Vassar 15, Union 8
The Brewers' bats stayed hot at the outset of the second game, and they built a five-run lead by the end of the second inning.
Beginning with Swarts' second dinger of the day, the Garnet Chargers showed some reliance and threatened several comebacks through the next seven innings.
Swarts drove home three runs with his fourth home run of the season, and junior Ryan Kolodziejczyk brought home another run on a double in the fifth. Trailing by eight in the eighth, Swarts started a four-run rally by reaching base for the fourth time in the doubleheader, singling to center field. After senior Andrew Keaveney worked the bases loaded with a base knock of his own, Swarts scored on a wild pitch. Senior Cooper Ames then cleared the bases with a double and later also scored on a wild pitch.
Swarts pitched the final two innings for Union, but could not prevent Vassar from answering back to the four-run eighth, and the Brewers tacked on three more runs in the eighth to hang 15 on the Garnet Chargers for the second straight game.
Miller, Keaveney, and Swarts all had multiple hits in the second game, first-year Jack McKillop worked a pair of walks for the sixth multi-walk game of his career, and Miller swiped a base for the ninth time this season.
Union takes on SUNY Cobleskill in Cobleskill, N.Y., beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31.
