TROY, N.Y. – Three Union College student-athletes earned weekly recognition from the Liberty League, while four more were lauded with honor roll spots for the week ending March 29, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Women's Golf Performer of the Week: Iyene Essien
Essien finished in second place with a two-day score of 160 at the Union Florida Spring Invitational, carding rounds of 78 and 82 to finish behind only the top-ranked golfer in NJCAA Division II. She finished the four longest holes on the course at three-over for the two days, the second-best score in the field, while also ranking second in pars and par-four scoring as well.
Men's Lacrosse Co-Rookie of the Week: Garrett Salit
Salit scored a team-leading six goals with one assist for seven points as Union split two matchups last week. The first-year played a role in four of the team's eight goals in a close 11-8 loss to #16/17 Middlebury on Tuesday, then scored all three of his goals in the final 35 minutes as the visitors closed on a 10-3 run to earn their first conference win of the season.
Men's Tennis Singles Performer of the Week: Jesus Sosa
Sosa went 3-1 in singles play on Spring Break for Union last week, earning one win at the top flight and a pair of wins at second singles. He started the week 3-0 against Division III competition, winning at first singles against Huntingdon and then adding a pair of second-flight wins, including a supertiebreaker victory to earn one of Union's two points against #34 Hamilton. His only loss of the week came against Division II Eckerd.
Honor Roll Mentions:
Baseball: Caleb Miller
Miller became Union's program leader in career runs scored with his 111th career run on Sunday against Vassar. He scored eight runs on the week as Union went 2-3 and as Miller batted .500 (10-20) with a triple, a home run, four RBI, and four walks. He also swiped five bags. Miller had three multi-hit games, including a pair of three-hit performances, and is also on a seven-game hitting streak. His 3-5 performance in the second game of the doubleheader against Vassar College on Sunday gives him a .400 batting average on the season.
Men's Lacrosse: Nick Lynch
Lynch combined for 30 saves and a .625 save percentage in two games for Union last week. The junior made a season-high 18 saves to keep Union close in an 11-8 loss to #16/17 Middlebury on Tuesday, then stopped 12-of-19 shots - including four in the fourth quarter - to help the Garnet Chargers to a big 13-7 win at Rensselaer on Saturday.
Women's Lacrosse: Maddy Schiller
Schiller recorded a team-best four goals in both games last week for Union. The junior netted more than half of the team's seven tallies in a close 10-7 loss to #9 Colby on Monday, scoring twice in the first half to help the home team lead for a majority of the opening half and then adding both of the team's second-half goals. She also had four scores in Saturday's 13-12 (OT) win at Ithaca, all coming in the final 26 minutes as Union outscored Ithaca 7-4 over that span for the comeback win. She capped the comeback with the overtime game-winner.
Softball: Carra Cleaves
Cleaves went 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA in three complete-game outings for Union last week, striking out 19 batters and allowing only six earned runs in 21 innings. The sophomore struck out eight and allowed only five hits in the team's closest game of the week, a 4-2 win over Lawrence on Thursday. Cleaves also hit .500 (7 of 14) with two RBIs and three runs scored in four games at the plate last week.
