Baseball Flexes Muscle in Second Game of Doubleheader with Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team split the first two games of its three-game series with the University of Rochester on Saturday at Towers Field, falling 12-2 in the first game and winning 13-3 in the second.

Game 1: Rochester 12, Union 2 (8 inn.)
Trailing 3-0 in the top of the fifth, sophomore Dylan Swarts doubled home a pair of runs with Union's fourth hit of the game. He drove home senior Caleb Miller and first-year Evan Lagemann

Senior Andrew Keaveney almost tied the game up in the next at-bat, but Swarts was cut down trying to score from second on Keaveney's infield single.

Miller and Lagemann ended up being the only Garnet Chargers (10-14, 3-5 Liberty League) to cross home in the opener of the twin bill as the Yellowjackets (9-15, 2-9 Liberty League) scored nine runs over their next four turns at bat to close out a 10-run victory in eight innings.

Keaveney reached base three times, increasing his season average to .419 thanks to his ninth multi-hit game of the year.

Junior Jacob Skarlis (2-4) caught the loss after allowing six earned runs in his sixth start of the year.

Game 2: Union 13, Rochester 3
The Garnet Charger bats woke up in the second game of the day, slashing 16 hits on their way to 13 runs. Ten of those 16 hits went for extra bases, featuring nine doubles. It marked Union's most doubles in a game since also hitting nine two-baggers against Vassar College on April 19, 2019. Miller notched three doubles of his own in the 10-run victory for Union, becoming the first Union hitter since Liam McIlroy in 2023 to have a trio of doubles in a single game.

Miller's first double of the game gave Union a 2-1 lead in the third inning and started a four-run rally. Keaveney and Lagemann also brought home runs in the inning with doubles, and Union never trailed again after putting its first crooked number up of the game.

Miller brought home another run with another double in the fourth as the Garnet Chargers scored three more times in that inning. Union failed to score in just the first, sixth, and seventh innings on its way to its first win over the Yellowjackets since May 12, 2018. Union won the Liberty League Championship that day over the Yellowjackets by a score of 8-0. (Union only had one double in that game, however.)

Union scored four runs in the final two innings Saturday on five hits, four of which were for extra bases. First-year Ryan Miressi had a pinch-hit RBI double, senior Brendan McCormick had a pinch-hit RBI triple, and Miller and Swart rounded out the game with RBI doubles.

Senior Alex Oppenheimer (3-1) earned the win with 5 1/3 innings of six-hit ball, first-year Lucas Miller backed him up with 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief work, and junior Ethan Weitz closed out the win with a scoreless ninth.

Caleb Miller was one of five Garnet Chargers with multiple hits, leading the way with a 4-6 performance. Miller, Swarts, Keaveney, and McCormick all drove in multiple runs as well.

Union and Yellowjackets will go at it one more time on Sunday, April 12, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
