Baseball Falls to Rochester 4-3

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team suffered a walkoff loss, 4-3, at the hands of the University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon at Towers Field.

Senior Cooper Ames went 2-4 with a two-RBI triple, and first-year Alex Casey fanned seven in seven innings of two-run work. Union (10-15, 3-6 Liberty League) led Rochester (10-15, 3-9 Liberty League) headed to the bottom of the ninth, but four straight Yellowjackets reached in their final turn at-bat. Teddy Monahan delivered the walkoff hit to left field, scoring two and securing the series victory for Rochester.

Casey only allowed two hits in the first three innings and took the ball for the third with a three-run lead.

Seniors Nico Lambros and Caleb Miller both reached to lead off the top of the inning, and Ames brought them around to score on his third triple of the season. Ames is tied with four other Liberty League players for the third-most triples in the conference this season. He is also one of three Garnet Chargers with 20+ RBIs in 2026. His 21 runs batted in trail only Miller (23) and sophomore Dylan Swarts (27) on the team.

Casey struck out six Yellowjackets after Union took the lead. His seven Ks are his most against a conference foe this season and his second most of the year behind a nine-punchout performance against Knox College on March 23.

Senior Jack Klein retired Rochester in order with two strikeouts during his first inning of relief work in the eighth. The Yellowjackets then used a single and two bunts to set up Monahan's walkoff after Union failed to add some insurance in the top of the frame. After a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth, Union made an error on the first sacrifice bunt then failed to get an out on the second, loading the bases. Klein was ahead of Monahan 1-2 in the count before conceding the game-winning base knock to left.

Union has an out-of-conference matchup with Middlebury College in Vermont on Wednesday, April 15 at 3:30 p.m. ahead of a weekend series with Bard College.
