Softball Splits Senior Day Doubleheader

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Union College softball team split its conference doubleheader against Skidmore on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Alexander Field.

The softball team honored its five seniors Riley Jahnle, Ellie Wintringer, Elizabeth Werner, and Haley Gibbons following the doubleheader.

GAME 1: Skidmore 13, Union 8

Junior Sophia Burynski went 1-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs, while Werner added a 2-for-3 performance with one RBI. First-year Coco Medeiros and sophomore Sammy Fenigstein each went 1-for-1 with an RBI and a run scored, and sophomore Amy FitzPatrick finished 1-for-3 with one RBI.

The Thoroughbreds struck first with a big opening lead. Sam Waters delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home Nate Burley, followed by Lulu Mickle's RBI single that scored Madison Bonham. Sophia Finch then broke the game open with a three-run home run, driving in Natalie Mayne, Mickle, and Elle Harrison to make it 6–0.

Union responded in the bottom half of the inning as Werner singled to score sophomore Carra Cleaves. Burynski added a sacrifice fly to plate Wintringer, and FitzPatrick singled home junior Maddy Ewald to cut the deficit in half at 6–3.

However, Skidmore extended its lead in the sixth inning when Burley singled to drive in Mayne and Mickle, and Bonham followed with an RBI single that brought in Burley and Rachel Monser.

In the seventh, Mickle tripled to score Waters and then Mayne added an RBI single to plate Mickle, and Monser doubled to bring home Mayne, pushing the lead to 13–3.

Union mounted a late rally in the seventh, starting with Medeiros singling to score in first-year Amelia Ormond, then Fenigstein driving in Medeiros with a single, before Burynski capped the scoring with a three-run home run that brought in Fenigstein and Wintringer, setting the final at 13–8.
