WLAX Remains Unbeaten in Conference with Win at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Union College women's lacrosse team outscored Vassar College 16-8 over the first 41:18 of the game and cruised the rest of the way to remain unbeaten in Liberty League play with a 17-14 victory over Vassar College on Saturday afternoon at Weinberg Turf Field.

Several Garnet Chargers had good days offensively, led by junior Maddy Schiller with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. Senior Christina Guanci and junior Gillian Joseph both scored four times, and senior Lana Mickelson also had four points with three goals and an assist for Union (7-4, 6-0 Liberty League)

Junior Hannah Compa had a huge day on the draw with a career-high 14 draw controls, tied for the most by a Union player since Caitlin Cuozzo '06 HOF '24 had 19 against SUNY Oneonta almost 20 years ago on May 2, 2006.

Schiller opened the scoring on Union's second possession of the afternoon before Vassar (5-7, 0-0 Liberty League) scored their first on the next possession. The visitors rattled off five of the next seven goals to take a 6-3 lead after one quarter, with Joseph scoring twice to go with one goal each from Mickelson, Guanci and sophomore Stella Del Papa. Union scored six times on seven shots in the period, including on all six on-target attempts.

Union continued its offensive onslaught with seven goals on just 10 shots in the second stanza to take a 13-7 lead at the half. The Garnet Chargers took control with five straight goals midway through the period, bookended by player-down goals from Mickelson and Schiller. Joseph added her third of the day while up a player in the final minute to help the Garnet Chargers to a six-goal advantage after 30 minutes.

The visitors scored three of the third quarter's first four goals to take their largest lead of the game at 16-8 with 3:42 to go in the period, finished off by Joseph's fourth and final tally of the day. Vassar ended the game on a 6-1 run, but first-year Sami Bonasia's goal with 5:32 to go made the score 17-12 and essentially finished off the game.

Senior Sydney Widlitz earned the win for Union, making four saves in the first half. Sophomore Sierra Harris played the second half in goal for the visitors, making seven stops.

Union will return home on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. matchup against Bard College.
