SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – First-year
Sami Bonasia scored a game-high four goals to lead 12 Garnet Chargers with at least one tally and 16 with at least one point in Tuesday night's 22-1 victory over Bard College in Liberty League action at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
Bonasia doubled her season scoring output with her season-best four tallies, while junior
Gillian Joseph led Union (8-4, 7-0 Liberty League) with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists despite taking much of the second half off. Several Union players scored their first goals of the season on Tuesday, including the first two collegiate goals for first-year
Jane Tardif and junior
Anna Dembowski, while Tardif also led all players with six ground balls.
Union dominated play from the opening draw, outshooting Bard (1-10, 0-7 Liberty League) by a 20-1 margin in the first quarter and 52-2 for the game, while also controlling 20-of-24 draws, led by junior
Hannah Compa with 14 draw controls.
After a turnover on their first possession, the Garnet Chargers established control quickly with goals on their next five possessions, including three goals in less than a minute from Joseph, Compa and junior
Maddy Schiller. Senior
Abbi Uhl and Dembowski scored 26 seconds apart soon after to bump the lead up to five with less than five minutes elapsed in the contest. After over four minutes without a goal, Union scored five times in 3:21 to reach the 10-goal margin with 2:40 left in the first quarter, helped by the first goal of the year from junior
Maddie Greco and the first of the game from sophomore
Stella Del Papa.
The only thing that could slow down Union was the weather, as a 68-minute lightning delay halted the game after Bonasia scored her first of the evening 1:52 into the second stanza. The home team scored the first four goals after the restart, with Bonasia scoring twice and both Del Papa and senior
Maddie Doyle netting one each, before the Raptors got on the board with a player-up tally in the final minute of the period.
Union scored the only seven goals of the second half, as the home team took 24 shots without any attempts at the other end. Bonasia, Uhl and junior
Bella Juliano helped the Garnet Chargers build up an 18-1 edge after 45 minutes, and two goals from Tardif sandwiched tallies from Bonasia and junior
Lexi Varano in a 4-0 fourth frame.
The Garnet Chargers will bring a six-game winning streak into a key Liberty League weekend, which begins on Friday with a 4 p.m. matchup at Rochester Institute of Technology.
