Baseball Outlasts Middlebury, 5-3

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Senior Andrew Keaveney went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and sophomore Dylan Swarts earned the save in the Union College baseball team's 5-3 road victory over Middlebury College at the Panthers' Baseball & Softball Complex Wednesday afternoon.

First-year Lucas Miller started the day on the bump for Union (11-15), and senior Jack Klein earned the win after 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief work along with five Ks. Swarts' classmate Ryan Calvario delivered four innings of two-run ball to keep Middlebury (14-10) at bay before Swarts' second save of his career. Those four Garnet Charger arms outdueled Middlebury's eight pitchers, thanks in part to four multi-hit performances from the road team's offense.

First-year Dennis Mulhearn got the scoring started for Union against Middlebury's second pitcher Kanan Clifford. Mulhearn batted with the bases loaded after Clifford issued a pair of free passes and hit senior Brendan McCormick with a pitch. The Orangeburg, N.Y. native collected his eighth hit and fifth RBI in his career, bringing home his classmate Evan Lagemann and Keaveney.

Back in the leadoff spot, first-year Jack McKillop tallied his first of two hits of the day with an RBI single in the sixth inning to put Union up 3-1. Keaveney extended his squad's lead with a two-RBI single on his way to his seventh 3+ hit game of the season.

After only allowing two hits through his first three innings, Calvario let up two runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Swarts made his way to the mound from his shortstop position for the fourth pitching appearance of his second season in Schenectady and looking for the save. He struck out Will Ashley to retire the side with a runner on second, giving Union back-to-back wins over Middlebury for the first time since 2016.

The Garnet Chargers return to conference action with a doubleheader against Bard College beginning at 12 p.m. at Central Park "A" Diamond on Saturday, April 18.
