SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Seven different players recorded at least one victory as the Union College women's tennis team earned its third straight win with a 7-0 sweep of Rochester Institute of Technology in a Liberty League matchup on Sunday afternoon at the Union Tennis Courts.
Union (5-9, 3-2 Liberty League) moved into a tie for fifth place in the conference standings by winning all nine contests on Sunday. Five players had multiple wins on the day for the home team.
Union set the tone early by dropping a combined six games in three doubles victories. Seniors
Claire Langille and
Skylar Semon got the match started with a 6-0 win at the second flight over Anika Galkiewicz and Melanie Saborio, followed by a 6-2 third-doubles win for senior
Sydney Alphabet and first-year
Jenny Park over Amulya Settyvari and Shayna Agarwal. Seniors
Kennedy Alexis and
Chara Meidani finished off the sweep by besting Emily Greb and Kira Kronenberg at the top flight by a 6-4 score.
The momentum stayed with the Garnet Chargers in singles play, with five of the six matches finishing in straight sets. Langille earned her second win of the day and fourth of a perfect 4-0 weekend to start off singles action, defeating Saborio, 6-2, 6-0, at third singles. Park needed only one game over the minimum to take down Settyvari for the second time in sixth-singles action, winning the final eight games in a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. Alphabet had the honor of picking up the clinching point with a 6-1, 6-0 win of her own at fourth singles over Galkiewicz.
First-year
Megan McCusker improved her personal singles winning streak to four matches by defeating Agarwal with a pair of 6-1 fifth-singles sets, followed by Meidani's comeback 2-6, 6-1, (10-8) supertiebreaker victory over Kronenberg at the second flight. Semon finished off the sweep with a pair of hard-fought 6-4 sets over Greb at first singles.
Union will look for a fourth straight win on Wednesday when the Garnet Chargers head across the river to battle with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 4 p.m. in Troy.
