TROY, N.Y. – The Union College women's tennis team came up just short in its Liberty League matchup with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday afternoon, falling by a 4-3 score at the Sharp Tennis Courts.
Union (5-10, 3-3 Liberty League) came one singles win away from an upset on Wednesday against second-place Rensselaer (8-6, 5-1 Liberty League), which swept doubles play and then played the six singles matches to a draw to escape with a win.
After the Engineers took all three doubles matches to gain the opening point, Union evened the score after just 15 minutes when Gauri Muliyil was forced to retire at 3-3 in the first set of her match with senior
Chara Meidani. The Engineers won at sixth and third singles to move a point away from a win, although Union stayed alive at sixth singles when another retirement gave first-year
Megan McCusker a 4-6, 2-1 win at the fifth flight.
RPI clinched the victory at the top flight, with Nicole Ridenour getting past senior
Skylar Semon, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. Senior
Sydney Alphabet ended the day on a positive note for the Garnet Chargers, coming back from a set down to defeat Juliette Ceas by a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 margin.
Union will close out the regular season at home next weekend, beginning on April 25 with a 3 p.m. matchup against Ithaca College.
