First-Quarter Dominance Leads to 24-5 WLAX Win over RIT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Union College women's lacrosse team scored 13 goals in an incredibly efficient opening period and rolled past Rochester Institute of Technology for its seventh straight victory, winning by the score of 24-5 in a Liberty League matchup on Friday afternoon at Judson Stadium.

Juniors Maddy Schiller and Gillian Joseph led the way with seven points each for Union (9-4, 8-0 Liberty League), with Schiller scoring a game-high six goals with one assist and Joseph netting five tallies with a pair of helpers. Eleven different Garnet Chargers found the net in the victory, while junior Kate Loughney led the defensive effort with four caused turnovers.

The Garnet Chargers took away much of the doubt from Friday's game in the opening 15 minutes, scoring 13 times on 20 shots. The visitors scored on six straight possessions to start the afternoon, with four of those goals coming from Schiller as well as one each by junior Hannah Compa and senior Lana Mickelson. RIT (8-6, 2-6 Liberty League) scored twice and Union added three more over the next 2:15 of action before Union scored on four of its final five possessions to take an 11-goal lead into the first quarter break.

Union took only 15 shots for the remainder of the game after its opening-quarter blitz, but the visitors firmly stayed in control thanks to eight unanswered tallies in the second and third quarters. Joseph, Schiller and sophomore Stella Del Papa netted the team's three second-stanza scores, while two each from Joseph and senior Christina Guanci were followed by one from first-year Sami Bonasia to round out the third period.

Both teams scored three times in the fourth frame, with junior Cecilia Sinopoli putting the exclamation mark on the afternoon with with her first of the year to end the scoring.

Union finished the day with a 35-16 edge in shots, with senior Sydney Widlitz needing to make only four saves over the first 48:25 to earn the win.

Union will face a much tougher task tomorrow, when the Garnet Chargers battle for first place in the conference #7 William Smith College beginning at 3 p.m. in Geneva.
