Women's Lax's Streak Snapped by #7 William Smith

GENEVA, N.Y. – The Union College women's lacrosse team had its seven-game winning streak snapped at the hands of #7 William Smith College by a score of 12-7 at Urick Stadium Saturday afternoon.

While the Garnet Chargers (9-5, 8-1 Liberty League) suffered their first conference loss of the season, Union can still clinch a top-two seed in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament with a victory over the University of Rochester next Saturday in the regular-season finale. William Smith (14-2, 10-0 Liberty League) clinched the top seed in the postseason with the win.

A two-goal run towards the end of the first period sent Union into the second all knotted up at 3-3 with William Smith. After assisting on a goal from senior Lana Mickelson earlier in the frame, junior Maddy Schiller registered her second point of the day with an unassisted score at 9:09. Junior Gillian Joseph scored her first goal of the game 8:57 into the action on her way to her sixth straight hat trick.

Mickelson and Schiller scored for the road team in the second with both goals momentarily giving the Garnet Chargers the lead. However, William Smith responded to Schiller's tally by rattling off six consecutive goals. The run lasted through the third quarter until Joseph scored to break the drought early in the fourth. Joseph scored twice in a span of 2:39, but after 10 Union turnovers in the second and third periods and five draw controls for William Smith, Joseph's mini rally only cut her team's deficit to three.

Trailing 10-7, the Garnet Chargers got seven shots off as they tried to leverage a comeback in the final 6:52. Senior Sammy Johnson hit the post, and then Schiller, Joseph, and senior Maddier Doyle all saw their attempts thwarted away by William Smith's goalie Casey Fiore.

Senior Sydney Widlitz matched Fiore with nine saves throughout the 60 minutes of play in the crease, but William Smith's five-shot advantage was the difference.

Senior Claudia Patz caused a game-high three turnovers, sophomore Kate Loughney scooped up four ground balls, and junior Kate Loughney led her squad with five draw controls.

Before the integral matchup with the Yellowjackets, the Garnet Chargers will face another foe from the 585 in SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday, April 21.
