TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Gillian Joseph scored a game-high six goals and senior
Sydney Widlitz made nine saves to become the school's all-time leader in career wins as the Union College women's lacrosse team remained unbeaten in Liberty League play with a 14-7 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday evening at ECAV Field.
Joseph matched her career-high with six tallies and also added an assist for a game-high seven points to pace Union (6-4, 5-0 Liberty League). Classmate
Maddy Schiller added six points on five goals and an assist to surpass the 100-point mark for her career, while senior
Christina Guanci had two goals and two assists for four points as well.
Widlitz turned aside nine shots on the other end to earn the 36th victory of her career, moving her past Rachel Beckman '06 for sole possession of first place on the program list. She was helped by junior
Anna Dembowski with a game-high seven ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Widlitz made four saves in a low-scoring first quarter, which saw only one goal off the stick of Schiller at the midway point of the frame. Sophomore
Maddie Dineen made a nice interception in the defensive zone and went nearly the length of the field before dishing off to Schiller for the score.
The second stanza featured seven goals, with Union posting a 4-3 edge to keep its lead. Rensselaer (6-5, 3-3 Liberty League) tied the score 5:46 into the period, but Joseph scored her first of the day from the eight-meter arc to put the Garnet Chargers back up and the visitors never lost the lead again. Leading by a 3-2 margin, goals by Guanci and Schiller 18 seconds apart built up a three-lead advantage before the Engineers got one back in the final half-minute.
The game turned in a dominant third quarter for Union, which saw Joseph net four unanswered tallies to singlehandedly put the visitors ahead by six. The Garnet Chargers took control with three player-down goals – all from Joseph – in the span of 99 seconds to take an 8-3 lead with 6:50 left, and Joseph added one more later in the frame. Union outshot RPI 10-0 in the period, as the visitors forced the home team into eight turnovers and controlled play for almost the entirety of the quarter.
Rensselaer scored the first three goals of the fourth to get back within three with nine minutes remaining, but Schiller netted a tough-angle score with 8:10 left to end the run and reestablish control for Union. The junior added her fourth of the game from the eight-meter arc with 5:04 on the clock to provide some more insurance, and Union put the game on ice thanks to tallies by Guanci, Schiller and senior
Maddie Doyle over the final 3:18.
The Garnet Chargers will continue Liberty League play on Saturday with a 3 p.m. matchup at Vassar College.
