SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College men's soccer team had a two-goal lead in the 82nd minute, but the Garnet Chargers conceded a pair of late goals to settle for a 2-2 draw with Plattsburgh State University on Saturday afternoon at College Park Field.
Sophomore
Kofi Sarfoh put Union (4-3-1) ahead with a pair of goals, giving him a team-leading six tallies on the year which are already tied for the most in a season by a Union player since 2021. First-year
Joseph Carofano added his team-leading third assist of the year as well for the home team.
Sarfoh opened the scoring in the 25th minute, heading home a Carofano corner kick for his fifth goal of the year. The header was one of two on-target shots by Union in the opening half, while first-year goalie
Michael Karcher needed to make three saves at the other end to keep his team ahead at the break.
Union doubled its lead in the 67th minute, when sophomore
Gavin Blake was taken down in the penalty box after a quick transition opportunity. Sarfoh stepped to the penalty spot and buried a shot right down the middle for his second career multi-goal effort.
The home team looked to be in good shape after that, before the Cardinals struck twice late to pull out an improbable draw. Xavier Kamba scored on a header with under eight minutes left to make it a one-goal game, then the visitors got a highlight-reel bicycle-kick goal from Michael Rodriguez in the 88th minute to knot the score. Plattsburgh came inches away from a victory in the dying seconds, as a last-gasp shot was cleared off the line by Sarfoh with under two seconds left to keep Union from a loss.
Plattsburgh finished the match with a 13-9 edge in shots. Karcher finished with five saves and Plattsburgh's Matthew D'Ippoilto had four stops as well.
Union will play its next three matches away from home, beginning on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. match at SUNY Morrisville.
