Men's Hockey Division I Timeline

DECEMBER 17, 1990 Union is invited to join the ECAC Division I Hockey League.
JANUARY 28, 1991 After more than a month of detailed discussions with faculty, students, and alumni, President Roger Hull accepts the ECAC invitation.
NOVEMBER 1, 1991 Union plays the first game in the program's Division I history, falling 9-6 to Merrimack in front of 2,198 fans at Achilles Rink. Craig Ferrero '92 scores the team's first Division I goal 1:00 into the second period and leads the team with three points on the night.
NOVEMBER 23, 1991 The Dutchmen post their first win as a Division I team with a 10-3 victory over Canadian opponent Concordia.
JANUARY 17, 1992 Craig Ferrero '92 scores with 10 seconds left in overtime to give the Dutchmen a 2-1 victory over Dartmouth, their first ECAC victory. Luigi Villa '95 records 45 saves.
MARCH 4, 1994 Union rallies to defeat visiting Colgate, 7-6, to clinch sixth place in the conference and its first berth in the ECAC Hockey Tournament. As a result of the team's success, Bruce Delventhal is named the ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year.
MARCH 11, 1994 The Dutchmen win their first ECAC Hockey Tournament game, knocking off local rival Rensselaer, 4-3, in the first game of their quarterfinal series in Troy.
JULY 4, 1996 Union announces the hiring of Stan Moore as head coach of the men's hockey team. Moore becomes the 17th head coach in the program's history and the second in the Division I era.
FEBRUARY 14-15, 1997 Trevor Koenig '98 posts Union's first back-to-back shutouts by beating Vermont and Dartmouth by the same 2-0 score at Achilles Rink. He goes on to set the then-ECAC record for consecutive scoreless minutes at 198:44, a mark that stood until 2008.
MARCH 19, 1997 Trevor Koenig '98 earns the Ken Dryden Award as ECAC Hockey's top goaltender and is the first Union player named to the All-ECAC Hockey first team. In addition, first-year head coach Stan Moore is the first rookie skipper to be named Coach of the Year and Andrew Will '97 is voted co-winner of the Best Defenseman Award as well.
APRIL 3, 1997 Trevor Koenig '98, who led the nation in both save percentage (.931) and goals against average (2.03), becomes the first Dutchman to be named an AHCA Division I All-American with his first-team selection.
AUGUST 13, 1998 Kevin Sneddon is announced as the 18th head coach of the men's hockey program.
JUNE 24, 2000 Brandon Snee '02 is drafted in the fifth round by the New York Rangers, the first Dutchman to be drafted in the Division I era.
OCTOBER 26, 2002 Kris Mayotte '06 makes 58 saves in a 5-5 tie at Bemidji State to set a new program Division I single-game record.
JULY 29, 2003 Union hires former Harvard assistant Nate Leaman as its 19th head coach.
OCTOBER 18, 2003 A newly renovated Frank L. Messa Rink is dedicated prior to Union's home-opener against Merrimack, a 3-1 victory.
NOVEMBER 5, 2004 Union edges No. 13 St. Lawrence at home, 6-5, for its first Division I win over a nationally ranked opponent.
NOVEMBER 13, 2004 The new Garnet Blades Varsity Locker Room is dedicated prior to the team's 3-2 win over Rensselaer.
NOVEMBER 18, 2005 The Dutchmen beat No. 5 Cornell 2-1 at Lynah Rink to earn their first win over a top-five nationally ranked team.
MARCH 4, 2006 The Dutchmen host Yale in the third-longest game in NCAA history, a five-overtime affair that lasts 141:35. The contest, which at the time was the longest in D-I history, starts at 7:00 p.m. and finishes at 1:10 a.m. Kris Mayotte '06 matches his school record with 58 saves.
MARCH 15, 2007 Olivier Bouchard '07 is named recipient of the inaugural ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year Award.
MARCH 1, 2008 Union defeats Brown, 2-0, to finish the regular season in fourth place, earning a first-round bye in the ECAC Hockey Tournament for the first time in program history.
FEBRUARY 11, 2009 Matt Cook '09 is named a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
MARCH 7, 2009 The Dutchmen defeat Clarkson, 7-2, to win their first ECAC Hockey Tournament series with a two-game sweep.
MARCH 19, 2009 Matt Cook '09 is named the ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year.
APRIL 9, 2009 Matt Cook '09 is named to the Lowe's Senior CLASS All-Academic All-America First Team.
DECEMBER 7, 2009 Union cracks the top-20 in the USCHO.com poll for the first time in nine years, coming in at No. 20 after starting the year with a 7-3-5 record.
FEBRUARY 5, 2010 Union defeats Clarkson 11-2, setting a school record for goals in a game. Eight different Dutchmen score in the victory.
FEBRUARY 19, 2010 Mario Valery-Trabucco '10, who would end the year with 45 points, sets the school record for points in a season with a goal against Princeton. The Dutchmen also clinch a first-round bye in the ECAC Hockey playoffs for the first time.
MARCH 12, 2010 Union and Quinnipiac play the second-longest game in NCAA history, spanning 150:22 - three periods and five overtimes. The Dutchmen set a school record with 75 shots in the contest. The Bobcats win 3-2, but Union comes back to win the next two games and clinch the series.
MARCH 15, 2010 Nate Leaman earns the Tim Taylor Award as ECAC Hockey's Coach of the Year.
MARCH 19, 2010 Union advances to the ECAC Hockey championship game for the first time in school history with a 3-1 victory over St. Lawrence in the semifinals at the Times Union Center in Albany.
APRIL 1, 2010 Nate Leaman is tabbed InsideCollegeHockey.com National Coach of the Year.
JUNE 8, 2010 Stéphane Boileau '11 is named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large second team, the first selection in program history.
OCTOBER 8, 2010 Josh Jooris '14 becomes the first Union player to score a hat trick in his debut as Union opens the season with a 9-0 win over Sacred Heart.
OCTOBER 9, 2010 Kelly Zajac '12 becomes the first Union player to score four goals in a game in a 7-3 win over Sacred Heart. Adam Presizniuk '11 registers a school-record five assists in the same game.
DECEMBER 11, 2010 Union sets a school record with six power play goals in a 6-2 win over Army at Messa Rink.
JANUARY 28, 2011 In front of a standing-room-only crowd at Messa Rink, Union defeats No. 1 Yale, 3-2, for its first-ever win against a No. 1-ranked team.
FEBRUARY 2, 2011 Stéphane Boileau '11 is named one of 10 finalists for Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
FEBRUARY 26, 2011 Union clinches its first-ever ECAC Hockey regular season championship with a 5-0 win over Princeton on Senior Night at Messa Rink.
MARCH 16, 2011 Nate Leaman accepts the Tim Taylor Coach of the Year Award, Keith Kinkaid '13 receives the Ken Dryden Award, Adam Presizniuk '11 earns the Best Defensive Forward Award, Brock Matheson '11 accepts the Best Defensive Defenseman award, and Stéphane Boileau '11 is named ECAC Hockey's Student-Athlete of the Year.
MARCH 20, 2011 Union earns a No. 2 seed in the Bridgeport Regional of the NCAA Tournament, marking Union's first NCAA Tournament appearance in the Division I era.
APRIL 8, 2011 Goaltender Keith Kinkaid '13 is named an AHCA first team All-American.
APRIL 13, 2011 Nate Leaman earns the Spencer Penrose Award as AHCA Coach of the Year.
APRIL 22, 2011 Rick Bennett is promoted from associate head coach to become Union's 20th head coach.
OCTOBER 29, 2011 Union raises two banners to honor the accomplishments of the 2010-11 team at Messa Rink before a 5-2 win over American International, one for the team's first Cleary Cup and the other for the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance.
JANUARY 13, 2012 Union and Harvard play the first outdoor game in ECAC Hockey history at Fenway Park, with the Dutchmen earning a 2-0 win.
FEBRUARY 25, 2012 Union clinches its second consecutive Cleary Cup with a 5-3 win at Colgate on the final day of the regular season.
MARCH 15, 2012 Rick Bennett earns the Tim Taylor Coach of the Year Award, while Troy Grosenick '13 receives the Ken Dryden Goaltender of the Year of the Award and Kelly Zajac '12 accepts the Best Defensive Forward honors at the ECAC Hockey Awards Banquet.
MARCH 15, 2012 Troy Grosenick '13 is named one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award.
MARCH 17, 2012 Union clinches the program's first Whitelaw Cup with a 3-1 win over Harvard in the ECAC Hockey Tournament championship.
MARCH 23, 2012 Union earns the No. 1 seed in the East Regional in Bridgeport, Conn., defeating Michigan State, 3-1, in its opening round game. The win is Union's first NCAA Tournament victory as a member of Division I.
MARCH 24, 2012 Union advances to its first Frozen Four with a 4-2 win over UMass Lowell in the Bridgeport Regional finals.
APRIL 7, 2012 Two days after finishing his collegiate career, Jeremy Welsh '12 makes his NHL debut with the Carolina Hurricanes. Welsh is the first Union player from the Division I era to appear in an NHL game.
JUNE 7, 2012 Troy Grosenick '13 earns CoSIDA Academic All-America third-team honors, making him only the third sophomore ever at Union to earn the national recognition.
JUNE 23, 2012 Shayne Gostisbehere '15 is selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the third round (78th overall) of the NHL Entry Draft, the earliest draftee of Union's Division I era.
JANUARY 26, 2013 Union defeats RPI, 3-2, in the inaugural Mayor's Cup at the Times Union Center as Matt Wilkins '16 scores the game-winning goal in the final minute of regulation.
FEBRUARY 15, 2013 Mat Bodie '14 sets the school record for points by a defenseman, passing Lane Caffaro '09 on the career points list with his 80th career point, an assist in a 4-2 win over Yale.
MARCH 23, 2013 Union earns its second-straight Whitelaw Cup with a 3-1 win over Brown in the ECAC Hockey Tournament championship game, clinching a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year.
NOVEMBER 2, 2013 Daniel Carr '14 scores his 60th goal as a Dutchman in a 4-2 win over Harvard, becoming the school's all-time Division I goal scoring leader.
DECEMBER 13, 2013 The Garnet and White earn their second win over a top-ranked team, toppling No. 1 St. Cloud State, 4-1. Mat Bodie '14 turns in a three-point night (1-2) while Alex Sakellaropoulos '17 makes 34 saves.
FEBRUARY 22, 2014 Union clinches the Cleary Cup outright (and its third in four seasons) with a 6-2 win over St. Lawrence at Messa Rink.
MARCH 14, 2014 Colin Stevens '15 sets a school single-season record with his sixth shutout in a 3-0 victory over Dartmouth in the first game of the ECAC Hockey Tournament quarterfinals.
MARCH 20, 2014 Shayne Gostisbehere '15 is named one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award.
MARCH 21, 2014 Union defeats Cornell in the ECAC Hockey Tournament semifinals, setting a program record for wins in a season with its 27th victory of the year.
MARCH 21, 2014 Shayne Gostisbehere '15 is named co-recipient of the ECAC Hockey Player of the Year and Best Defensive Defenseman of the Year awards, while Colin Stevens '15 receives the Ken Dryden Award as ECAC Hockey's top goaltender.
MARCH 22, 2014 The Dutchmen defeat Colgate, 5-2, to win their third straight Whitelaw Cup, a feat accomplished for just the third time in the 53-year history of ECAC Hockey.
MARCH 24, 2014 Union earns its first No. 1 ranking as a Division I program, claiming the top spot in the USCHO.com poll heading into the NCAA Tournament.
APRIL 9, 2014 Rick Bennett is named the Spencer Penrose Award winner as the AHCA Division I Coach of the Year.
APRIL 10, 2014 Union reaches the national championship game for the first time in the Division I era with a 5-4 victory over No. 3 Boston College in the national semifinals. Daniel Ciampini '15 nets a hat trick and Colin Stevens '15 makes 34 saves in the victory.
APRIL 11, 2014 A program-record four Union players are recognized as AHCA All-Americans: Mat Bodie '14 and Shayne Gostisbehere '15 make the AHCA East First Team, while Daniel Carr '14 and Colin Stevens '15 make the East Second Team.
APRIL 12, 2014 Union reaches the pinnacle of college hockey, defeating #2 Minnesota, 7-4, to win the program's first Division I national championship at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Seven different Dutchmen scored one goal each, while Shayne Gostisbehere '15 led all players with three points and was on the ice for all seven tallies, finishing with a plus-seven rating.
JUNE 5, 2014 Cole Ikkala '14 (second team) and Mat Bodie '14 (third team) are named to the Academic All-America Men's At-Large Team, just the third time in Union history that two teammates earned Academic All-America honors in the same season.
OCTOBER 10, 2015 The 2014 NCAA Championship banner is raised at Messa Rink in a pregame ceremony before a season-opening 7-3 win over American International.
JANUARY 24, 2015 Daniel Ciampini '15 ties the school single-game record with six points (3 goals, 3 assists) and Colin Stevens '15 matches the school record with his 46th career victory in goal as the Dutchmen defeat RPI, 8-3, to win the Mayor's Cup.
MARCH 19, 2015 Daniel Ciampini '15 becomes one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award.
APRIL 10, 2015 Daniel Ciampini '15 is named an AHCA East First Team All-American.
JANUARY 8, 2016 Mike Vecchione '17 becomes Union's 13th 100-career point scorer in the Division I era and the fastest to reach the milestone, accomplishing the feat in 96 games.
APRIL 8, 2016 Theo Di Pauli von Treuheim '16 is named a Senior CLASS Award Second Team All-American.
MAY 2, 2016 Former Dutchman Shayne Gostisbehere '15 is named one of three finalists for the Calder Memorial Trophy, awarded to the top rookie in the NHL, along with Connor McDavid and Artemi Panarin.
OCTOBER 22, 2016 Mike Vecchione '17 becomes just the second Dutchman to score four goals in a game in a 5-2 win against Niagara.
FEBRUARY 11, 2017 Mike Vecchione '17 registers an assist in an 8-3 win at Dartmouth for his 51st point of the season, surpassing the previous record of 50. Vecchione would finish the season with 63 points, one ahead of teammate Spencer Foo '18 for the school's single-season record.
FEBRUARY 25, 2017 Union clinches a share of its fourth Cleary Cup in seven seasons with a 3-3 tie at No. 9 Cornell. Mike Vecchione '17 chips in a goal and an assist to become the program's all-time leading scorer with 171 points, surpassing the 170 points of Terry Campbell '91 from 1987-91.
MARCH 15, 2017 Spencer Foo '18 and Mike Vecchione '17 are named two of the 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award.
MARCH 17, 2017 Mike Vecchione '17 is named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Year, while Rick Bennett wins the Tim Taylor Award as the league's Coach of the Year.
MARCH 30, 2017 Mike Vecchione '17 becomes Union's first-ever Hobey Baker Award Hat Trick Finalist.
APRIL 6, 2017 Mike Vecchione '17 and Spencer Foo '18 earn AHCA/ CCM East First Team All-American honors.
OCTOBER 21, 2017 Rick Bennett becomes the winningest coach in Union hockey history, picking up his 139th career coaching victory with a 5-1 win at Niagara.
OCTOBER 6, 2018 Union unveils a brand-new video scoreboard at Messa Rink before the team's season-opening 4-1 win over Army West Point. The board is named for lead donors Robert Knibb '81, Anthony Ianniello '65 and Frank Messa '73.
NOVEMBER 24, 2018 Union wins the Friendship Four title with a 2-1 victory over Boston University in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Darion Hanson '21 made 39 saves against the Terriers and 70 saves in two games to earn Most Valuable Player honors.
JANUARY 4, 2019 Union dominates No. 1 St. Cloud State in a 7-2 victory at the Three Rivers Classic, marking the Dutchmen's third victory over a top-ranked team. Cole Maier '19 records four assists in the win, one shy of the program single-game record.
FEBRUARY 26, 2020 Mike Vecchione '17 and Shayne Gostisbehere '14 named to the ECAC Hockey All-Decade First Team while Daniel Carr '14, and Mat Bodie '14 earn Second Team Honors.
APRIL 9, 2021 Josh Kosack '22 is named the recipient of the Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award.
JANUARY 22, 2022 The NCAA Division III membership votes to allow multi-divisional institutions to offer athletic scholarships to their Division I programs, enabling Union College the opportunity to offer hockey scholarships.
FEBRUARY 2, 2022 Daniel Carr '14 (Canada), Spencer Foo '17 (China), and Parker Foo '20 (China) become the first Dutchmen alumni to earn spots on Olympic rosters.
FEBRUARY 12, 2022 Parker Foo '18 scores the first-ever goal for the Chinese men's national team in the Olympics.
MARCH 17, 2022 Josh Kosack '22 is named the ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year.
APRIL 8, 2022 Josh Kosack '22 becomes Union's first-ever recipient of the Hockey Humanitarian Award.
APRIL 15, 2022 Josh Hauge is named the 22nd head coach in Union's history.
