Nichols Burns the Lamp in Union Win

Box Score

Schenectady, NY (Oct. 24, 2004) The goal judge lights might have to be changed at Messa Rink after Elise Nichols (Pittsfield, MA) lit the lamp with a school record four goals, including one short-handed, in Union's 7-1 victory over Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon for the team's second win in a row.  Union stormed the Pioneers net with a 27-6 shot advantage over the first two periods as they pulled even at 2-2-0 on the season.

Meghan O'Connor (Portsmouth, RI) got Union going with a first period, power play goal at 9:54.  O'Connor took a pass from Courtney Chais (Plantation, FL) between the face-off circles and beat Sacred Heart goaltender Sarah Perry to the right side.  Two minutes later Nichols got what proved to be the game-winner with her first goal of the game, hitting the same spot on goal as O'Connor.

Senior Erin Vehec (Washingtonville, NY) also had a successful day for the Dutchwomen with a goal and four assists, including Nichols game-winner.  Vehec scored Union's third goal of the game at 3:14 of the second period on one of two assists for Ashley Kilstein (Cherry Hill, NJ).

Sacred Heart spoiled Union goaltender Lauren Carlson's (Rochelle, IL) chance for a shutout three minutes after Vehec's tally with a goal from Michelle Panella who skated across the front of the goal and buried a shot just inside the right post past Carlson.

Nichols picked up the hat trick just as a Sacred Heart power play expired at 11:06 in the third and wrapped up the scoring just over two minutes later.

Union's netminder finished with 10 saves in her first win of the season.  Perry made 29 saves in the loss for Sacred Heart.

The Dutchwomen wrap up a three-game homestand next weekend when they host Rensselaer on Saturday, October 30 at 2:00 p.m.
