Union Gets Ambushed by Cornell; 8-2

Box Score

Ithaca, NY (Nov. 12, 2004) Union struck first but Cornell struck often, handing the Dutchwomen an 8-2 defeat Saturday night at Lynah Rink in women's hockey action.  Union was outshot 26-8, managing just four shots over the final two periods against a stubborn Cornell defense.  They fall to 3-4-1 overall and remain winless in league play at 0-3 while the Big Red pick up their first win of the season, having played three ECACHL games.

Freshman Ashley Kilstein (Cherry Hill, NJ) extended her point-streak to six games with Union's first goal at 3:57 of the first period and her fifth of the season.

Cornell answered with vigor, scoring four of its seven unanswered goals in the first period, all within a span of six minutes.  Maryann Nowak started things up with her first goal of the season at 13:25.  Just over three minutes later Brianne Schmidt scored her first of two on the evening on the power play off an assist from Jami Ramenofsky.  The next goal came 1:27 later from Caroline Scott, followed by another strike a minute later to wrap up the first period and send Union staggering to the locker room.

Union held Cornell to one goal in the second period before Schmidt scored her second of the game at 8:17 of the third.

The Dutchwomen scored another unassisted goal at 12:43 of the final period as Meghan O'Connor (Portsmouth, RI) got her third of the season.

Miranda Callaghan wrapped up the scoring with Cornell's eighth tally at 15:58.

Union goaltender Amanda Hanson (Brainerd, MN) made 18 saves in what turned out to be a rough outing for the sophomore.  Flora Vineberg made six saves for Cornell.

Cornell capitalized on all three of its power play opportunities while Union was shut down in all nine of its attempts.

Union must now find a way to rebound from the loss as they face Cornell again tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
