Box ScoreSchenectady, NY (Nov. 20, 2004) For the second time in as many days, Yale skated out of Messa Rink with a shutout win, courtesy of a 5-0 victory Saturday. Sophomore Christina Sharun started the Bulldog's offense with a goal just over five minutes into the contest when she deposited a wrap-around shot to the back of the net.
Union's best scoring opportunity came on a near miss by senior Courtney Riepenhoff (Skillman, NJ), when her wrist shot caught the pipe with 12:22 left in the opening period. The Dutchwomen special teams went 0-for-5 on the day and created just four shots while holding an on-ice advantage.
The Yale scoring was ignited in the second period when junior Natalie Babony and sophomore Nina Resor scored just thirty-three seconds apart to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Sharun assisted on the Babony mark, while junior Lisa Jacque was credited with a helper on both goals. Junior Deena Caplette capped the second period scoring when she beat Union goaltender Amanda Hanson (Brainerd, MN) with 12:11 remaining on the clock. Sophomore Sheila Zingler closed out the scoring with a third period power play goal for Yale.
Freshman Shivon Zilis went the distance in goal for the visitors, making 18 saves in front of net. Hanson turned away 28 Yale shots in defeat. The Bulldogs out shot Union 33-18 for the game and were 1-for-2 on the power play.
Yale improved to 5-3-0 overall, and 4-2-0 in conference play. Union, which dropped to 3-7-1 overall, 0-6-0 in ECACHL play, has now come up short in its last five contests. The Dutchwomen return to the ice when they host league foe Brown on December 3rd at 7:00 p.m.
