Union Earns 3-3 Tie at Quinnipiac

Box Score

Northford, CT (Nov. 5, 2004) Union extended its unbeaten streak to four games with a 3-3 tie against Quinnipiac in women's hockey action Friday night at the Northford Ice Pavilion.  Three different players scored for the Dutchwomen who have been shutout by the Bobcats in the previous two meetings.  Union is now 3-2-1 on the season while Quinnipiac is 2-6-1.

Union scored the game's first goal, as Meghan O'Connor (Portsmouth, RI) deflected home a shot from Katelyn Aitcheson (Stratford, ONT) for an even-strength tally with 13:10 remaining in the first.

Union kept the Bobcats off the scoreboard in the first period, despite being outshot 18-5 as Amanda Hanson (Brainerd, MN) stood her ground in net.

Quinnipiac capitalized in the second period though with two goals to take the lead.  Pellatt's determination would lead to the first goal as she laid out on the ice to drive home a rebound after her initial shot was denied by Hanson

The Bobcats took a 2-1 lead at 18:50, less than a minute after the first goal when Erin Sweet took a shot that was initially knocked away by Hanson, and blasted the puck into the right corner of the net.

The Dutchwomen responded and tied the score at two just under two minutes later.  Ashley Kilstein (Cherry Hill, NJ) broke in on net, and made a great move to fake out Quinnipiac goalie Janelle Wolitski and then flick the puck past her on the left side.

The back-and-forth battled continued as Quinnipiac regained the lead with :38 left in the second period as Aimee Whittaker, who was wide open in front of the net, slipped the puck past Hanson off a feed from Caitlin Peters.

Union came back on the power play with 1:46 remaining in regulation to tie the game at three.  Courtney Riepenoff (Skillman, NJ) sent a shot past Wolitski, who was screened on the play, to send the game into overtime.

Neither team could capitalize in the extra session despite having power play opportunities and had to settle for the tie.

Quinnipiac outshot Union for the game by a 38-19 margin. Hanson came up with 35 saves for the Dutchwomen, while Wolitski made 16 saves in net for Quinnipiac.

Union will face off against Quinnipiac again tomorrow at 5 p.m.
