Union Comeback Falls Short at Quinnipiac

Box Score

Northford, CT (Nov. 6, 2004) Despite falling behind by three goals Union fought back to tie the game in the third period but a power play goal led to a 4-3 loss against Quinnipiac at the Northford Ice Pavilion to wrap up a two-game series against the Bobcats.  Union's Linnea Edwardson (Duluth, MN) led the Dutchwomen with two goals, including the game-tying score at 2:46 of the third period.  The loss puts Union at 3-3-1 on the season while Quinnipiac improves to 3-6-1.

Quinnipiac put Union on its heels with the first three goals of the game.  Aimee Whittaker started things off with her first of three goals at 10:44 of the first period on the power play.  Whittaker blasted a shot from the face off circle past Union goalie Lauren Carlson (Rochelle, IL), who was screened on the play.  Union came away from the opening stanza just a goal down though, despite being outshot 23-2.  They got some great goaltending from Carlson who finished with 44 saves on the night.

Quinnipiac extended its advantage in the second period with two back-to-back goals.  Whittaker tacked on another one at 5:13 before Kathryn Dallimore gave the Bobcats a 3-0 lead with her first goal of the season.

Union finally had enough and came to life as they started to mount their comeback.  Edwardson answered with her first goal of the game at 14:36 off a feed from freshman Stephanie Armstrong (Stoneham, MA).  Four minutes later Kelly Lannan (Winchester, MA) added an unassisted tally on the power play to bring the Dutchwomen to within one.

In the third period Edwardson pulled Union even at three with her second goal of the game with an assist to Ashley Kilstein (Cherry Hill, NJ).  Carlson continued to deny Quinnipiac with 14 saves in the third period to keep Union alive.

The Bobcats finally broke the tie on the power play after a fortunate high sticking call on Kate Gustafson (Kenora, ONT) gave them the advantage.  Whittaker capitalized on the team's good fortune at 11:02, taking a feed from Karrah Stephen.  Union was unable to recover and Quinnipiac held on to escape with the win.

Despite the loss Union coach Tim Gerrish was pleased with the way his players battled back.  "Obviously we are very disappointed about the loss.  Both goaltenders played very well this weekend for us.  The kids came back today with confidence and the team continues to make progress.  Hopefully as they get better we won't put ourselves in this type of position where we are having to battle back from a large deficit."

Catherine Lapare made 15 saves in net for Quinnipiac to get the win while Carlson did all she could in net for Union but still enduring the loss.

Union will get ready to resume conference play next weekend as they travel to Cornell for a pair of games starting with the opener on Friday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m.
