Union blanked by Wayne State

Box Score

Schenectady, NY (Dec. 29, 2004) Wayne State scored five goals over the final two periods to hand Union its tenth straight loss by a 6-0 count at home in non-conference action Wednesday evening. It was the fifth time in seven games that the Dutchwomen have been held scoreless, while surrendering 46 goals in those contests. Goaltender Amanda Hanson (Brainerd, MN) made 36 saves in goal for the Dutchwomen, who fall to 3-12-1 on the season.

Wayne State struck quickly as Ashley King came up with her seventh goal of the season at 1:17 of the first period for the eventual game-winner.  She received a feed in front of the net from Jessica Snelgrove and was able to sneak it past Hanson. The Dutchwomen had a chance to tie things up with just under two minutes before the intermission off a shot in front of the goal by freshman Stephanie Armstrong (Stoneham, MA) but Warriors' netminder Tina Thibideau was able to cover up the puck.

Union was held to just one shot in the second period as Wayne State connected on two of its 15 shots on goal. Kelly Zamora struck first for the Warriors at 9:52 as she knocked her own rebound shot out of mid-air and past Hanson. Kristy Leng extended the lead to 3-0 on the power play with a tip-in off a pass from Laura Monk.

Monk came back in the third period with a goal of her own at 6:49, four minutes after Emily McGrath-Agg scored her fourth goal of the season. She corralled a rebound and snuck it into the far side of the goal to make it a 5-0 game.

Heidi Burns wrapped up the scoring at 13:23 with her first of the season. Union tested Thibideau at 9:35 of the third with successive shots from Elise Nichols (Pittsfield, MA) and Armstrong, but the senior stood her ground to pick up two of her 12 saves on the night.

Union was outshot 42-12 for the game. Thibideau improved to 5-4-1 on the season while Hanson suffered her sixth loss to fall to 2-6-1.

The two teams will square off once again tomorrow afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. faceoff.
