Union shutout by Wayne State in series finale

Box Score

Schenectady, NY (Dec. 30, 2004) Union was unable to crack the Wayne State defense again as they lost a 5-0 decision in the series finale between the two teams on Thursday afternoon at Messa Rink. The Warriors outshot the Dutchwomen 43-11 as the home team used two goalies over the course of the game. Union is now 3-13-1 on the season while Wayne State improved to 7-10-3.

Jessica Haydahl scored two of Wayne State's three, first period goals to lead the offense out to an early advantage.  Her first strike came at 5:27 off a rebound shot from Heidi Burns that Haydahl was able to sneak past Union goalie Lauren Carlson (Rochelle, IL) who would be replaced midway through the second period after making 22 saves on the day.  Haydahl and Burns connected six minutes later to make it a 2-0 game.  This time Haydahl finished off a nice centering pass from the left wing by her teammate after finding perfect position in front of the net.

The Warriors relied on a bit of good fortune for their third goal.  Kelly Zamora was credited with the goal when her centering attempt from behind the net deflected off a Union defender's skate and past Carlson at 15:27.

Ashley King made it a 4-0 game at 8:01 of the second period taking a pass in front of the goal from Danielle Wilson on the right wing for her eighth of the season.  Following that goal Dana Smullyan (Salisbury, CT) replaced Carlson in net for the Dutchwomen for her first appearance of the season.  The junior surrendered a goal on 17 shots when Laura Monk one-timed a backhanded shot at 17:28 of the second.

Union tested Wayne State goalie Valery Turcotte on a few occasions throughout the game, but the freshman stayed sharp and came up with 11 saves to earn the shutout win.

Union gets back to league play next weekend when they travel to Hanover, NH to face Dartmouth in a two-game set beginning on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
