Mayotte, Webb Lead Union Past Yale, 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. Jordan Webb scored two goals and Kris Mayotte stopped 23 of 24 shots as the Union men"s hockey team skated past Yale 3-1 at Ingalls Rink in ECAC play.

The loss spoiled another great outing by Yale goalie Josh Gartner who came up with 44 saves, including 18 in the final period. His biggest stop of the third came on a Webb penalty shot after a Yale player was called for pushing the net off its mounting as a Union skater was in position to score a goal.

The first period featured 22 shots on goal but only one found the net, and it was not until the last minute. Forward Joe Zappala passed the puck out of the Yale zone to captain Vin Hellemeyer who sent a perfect one-touch lead feed to linemate Jeff Hristovski. The Eli center took it from inside the blueline to a few feet from the crease where he flipped the puck over Mayotte"s shoulder with 49.3 seconds on the clock. Hristovski"s 12th goal of the year sent the Bulldogs into intermission with momentum after being outshot 13-9, with Gartner coming up with numerous big saves.

The Dutchmen dominated play in the second frame by scoring both goals and outshooting the home team 15-4. Webb"s odd-angle shot five minutes into the period evened the score at 1-1. Webb (11th goal) took a pass from Joel Beal, who had two assists, and wristed a 15-footer from the goal line on the side of the net and caught Gartner by surprise. The puck may have bounced off the goalie"s shoulder before entering the back of the net.

Union capitalized on its fourth power-play chance of the night to take the lead. Brent Booth"s shot from the point was tipped home by Jason Visser (10th) at the 8:41 mark to make it 2-1, and the Bulldogs were fortunate to keep it a one-goal deficit the rest of the period.

The Dutchmen had a chance to put the game away with a penalty shot with 15:49 left in the third. Webb deked Gartner and went to the goalie"s right before letting go a wrister that the Bulldog kicked aside.

Webb got revenge almost five minutes later when the Bulldogs could not clear the puck in their own end. His shot from the slot went through a crowd to make it 3-1.
