Schenectady, N.Y. (February 8, 2004) - - The Princeton University Tigers (14-6-0, 7-4-0) defeated the Union College Dutchwomen 10-1 at Messa Rink this afternoon in ECAC women's hockey action. The loss drops the Dutchwomen to 3-22-1, 0-10-0 on the season. Seven different Tigers scored goals in the game, led by freshman Laura Watt (Ajax, Ontario), sophomore Tarah Clark (Toronto, Ontario) and sophomore Heather Jackson (Exeter, New Hampshire) with two goals each. Watt now has seven goals on the season, Jackson has nine and Clark scored her first two goals of the year.
Princeton took a 4-0 lead after one period before Union got on the board with a goal by freshman Elise Nichols (Pittsfield, Massachusetts) just 11 seconds into the second period to cut the margin to 4-1. The unassisted goal was a team-leading 12th of the season for Nichols. It was all Princeton from that point on as the Tigers registered two goals in the next 1:46 to make the score 6-1. After two even-strength goals during the middle of the period, Princeton closed out the second with two shorthanded tallies at 13:27 and 14:50 to make the final margin 10-1. Both teams went scoreless in the third period.
Freshman goaltender Mandy Hanson (Brainerd, Massachusetts) got the start for Union and made 18 saves before giving way to sophomore Dana Smullyan (Salisbury, Connecticut) with 1:57 gone in the second period. Hanson allowed six goals in taking the loss for Union, dropping her record to 1-10-0 on the season. Smullyan allowed four goals on 13 shots in the second before turning the game over to freshman Lauren Carlson (Rochelle, Illinois) at the start of the third period. Carlson made nine saves and did not allow a Tiger goal in 20 minutes of action. Princeton senior Megan Van Beusekom (Loretto, Minnesota) made three first period saves to pick up the win for the Tigers; she is now 10-6 on the season. Sophomore Roxanne Gaudiel (Venice, Florida) relieved Van Beusekom to start the second period and allowed one goal and made seven saves. The Tigers outshot the Dutchwomen 46-10 in the game.
The Dutchwomen will hit the road for four games starting at Vermont February 13 and 14 for a weekend series in Burlington before heading to Brown for a pair of games on the 20th and 21st. The Dutchwomen will close out their regular season home schedule February 27-28 with a pair of games with the Cornell Big Red.
