Union denied first league win

Box Score

Schenectady, NY (January 28, 2005) Visiting Vermont kept Union out of the winner's column Friday night by a score of 4-1.  The Catamounts improved to 4-18-3 overall, 2-9-0 in ECACHL play.  The Dutchwomen fell to 3-19-1 on the season, 0-13-0 in conference play.

The Catamounts jumped on the Dutchwomen early with a short-handed goal by junior Hilary Johnson just over four minutes into the contest to take a 1-0 lead.  Vermont held an 11-7 shot advantage after one period of play and went on to a 38-21 bulge for the game.

The Catamounts opened the second period on a tear, scoring twice in the first thirty-four seconds to take a 3-0 lead.  Sophomore Jenny Hogan scored just ten seconds into the period for Vermont, while rookie teammate Stephanie Tewksbury added another when she scored off of a flurry in front of net twenty-four seconds later.

The Dutchwomen got back into the game two minutes later when sophomore Elise Nichols (Pittsfield, MA) notched a short-handed goal for Union.  It was Nichols' team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Despite a strong effort from Union, Vermont freshman Kristi Anderson nailed down the victory when she scored the game's lone power play goal at the 11:24 mark in the second period, deflating Union and giving the Catamounts a 4-1 lead.

Senior Kami Cote went the distance in net for Vermont, making 20 saves in picking up her fourth win of the season.  Sophomore Amanda Hanson (Brainerd, MN) and junior Dana Smullyan (Salisbury, CT) split time in net for the Dutchwomen, making 10 and 24 saves, respectively.

Union will look to spoil Vermont's swan song as an ECACHL foe tomorrow at Messa Rink at 4:00 p.m., as the Catamounts are leaving the conference after this season.
