Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Union grounded by Air Force at Ice Breaker Invitational, 9-2

Box Score

Colorado Springs, CO (Oct. 8, 2005) Union surrendered five goals in the first period, bowing to Air Force by a 9-2 score in the second game of the Ice Breaker Invitational at World Arena. It was the second straight game the Dutchmen allowed five goals in a period as they fell to 0-2 on the season. Air Force improved its record to 1-1, rebounding from its loss to Maine the day before.

Union came out and played a physical game for the first 10 minutes before defensive breakdowns led to three Air Force goals within a four minute span. Josh Schaffer got things going for the Falcons at 9:51 when he took a lead pass over the blue line from Peter Shenk and beat Union goalie Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK) high over his left shoulder. Brian Gineo scored on the power play less than two minutes later.

Eric Ehn scored his first of two goals in the game to make it 3-0 in favor of Air Force at 13:25. Ehn took a pass from Josh Print and skated across the front of the goal, beating Mrazek on the left side. Just under two minutes later Brooks Turnquist converted on the power play putting away a rebound shot.

Junior Billy Devoney made it 5-0 at 18:41 to cap off the first period scoring.

Union sophomore Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) was able to get his team on the board with his second goal of the season just 15 seconds into the second period. Coyle stole the puck in front of the Air Force goal and stuffed it past goaltender Ian Harper who finished with 21 saves in the win.

Ehn's second goal came at 6:02 to push the lead back to five, putting home a rebound past goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA). The senior replaced Mrazek to start the second period and finished with 27 saves on 31 shots. Mrazek made nine saves on 14 shots in the loss.

Two more Air Force goals made it 8-1 in the third period before freshman T.J. Fox (Oswego, NY) scored his first goal of the season for Union at 15:26. Fox took a pass in front from Michael Beynon (Nepean, ONT) and sent a quick wrist shot into the back of the net.

Josh Frider scored the final goal of the game 22 seconds later for Air Force.

Union was outshot 45-24 in the loss, its worst since an 8-1 defeat at home against Harvard back on February 2, 2005.

The Dutchmen finished 0-for-4 on the power play while Air Force converted on two of its seven opportunities.

Union will look to rebound next weekend in its home-opener as they host Sacred Heart on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
