Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Dutchmen blank Wayne State, 4-0

Box Score

Schenectady, N.Y. (Nov. 26, 2005) In a game marred by physical play, penalties and ejections, Union came away with a 4-0 non-conference win over visiting Wayne State Saturday at Messa Rink.  A grand total of 171 penalty minutes were handed out as Union went 2-for-11 on the power play, while Wayne State went 0-for-6 in the man-advantage.

Neither team was able to break into the scoring column in the first period, which saw Union out shoot the Warriors 13-8.  Wayne State goaltender Will Hooper kept it scoreless early on in the second period by making a great over-the-shoulder save on a wrist shot from Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) at 4:24.  He again turned away the Dutchmen at 8:34 when he denied Scott Seney's (Silver Spring, MD) wrap-around shot, silencing the Union faithful.

However, the Dutchmen attack finally lit up the scoreboard at 15:59 in the second period when freshman Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, ALB) scored on the power play off a feed from Seney.  Michael Beynon (Nepean, ONT) also assisted on the play.  Less than three minutes later Union struck again off a pretty passing display when Torren Delforte (Shortsville, NY) sent home a quick pass from Chris Potts (Phillipsburg, NJ) in front of net for a 2-0 lead.  Potts redirected a pass from Matt Cook (Belle Mead, NJ), who also assisted on the goal, to Delforte for the mark.

As the second period wound down the physical play on the ice began to escalate and tempers came to a boiling point as the horn sounded at the end of the period.  A slew of players from both sides became entangled in fighting in front of the Union net.  Seventy minutes of penalties, two disqualifications, two major fighting penalties, and three 10-minute misconducts were levied after things were broken up by the officials.

The third period finished much the same way as the second period, with four 10-minute misconducts, a game misconduct, one 5-minute major penalty and four unsportsmanlike minors being issued in the closing four minutes.  Lost in the fracas were goals from Cook and a power play tally by Potts to give Union the 4-0 final score.

Senior Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) picked up his seventh win in net on the season, stopping 25 shots en route to his second shutout on the campaign.  Hooper turned back 36 shots in goal for the visitors.

The Dutchmen improved to 7-5-2 on the season, while Wayne State fell to 0-8-2. Union renews a storied rivalry when they visit Ritter Arena for the first time since February 26, 1991 to take on Division I Independent, RIT on Friday, December 2nd at 7:00 p.m. The teams will play a home-and-home series with the Messa Rink showdown scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
