Schenectady, N.Y. (Nov. 5, 2005) Union used five unanswered goals to cruise past visiting Sacred Heart, 6-3, Saturday at Messa Rink. The win was the Dutchwomen's second in as many days against the Pioneers, and sixth straight overall in the series. Six different players scored for Union in the win, which saw the hosts hold a 40-30 shot advantage.Â
Sacred Heart's Allie Gillman scored the game's first goal just under three minutes into action when she took a feed from Michelle Panella in front of net to give the visitors a
1-0 lead. Sophomore right wing Linnea Edwardson (Duluth, MN) squared it at 1-1 at 5:35 when she picked up a loose puck in the zone and blasted home an unassisted goal for the Dutchwomen.Â
The Pioneers, however, were quick to respond. Just nine seconds later Sacred Heart's Jaclyn Rideout stole the puck from a Union skater, took two strides and deposited her first goal of the season past Union netminder Alex Zirbel (Clearwater, FL). The game remained 2-1 Sacred Heart until freshman Gabi Wintner (Calgary, ALB) slipped a shot underneath Pioneers' goaltender Stephanie Boulay's pads at 11:05.Â
Unable to capitalize on either of its first period power plays, Union managed to go back up on top 3-2 when junior Elise Nichols (Pittsfield, MA) scored her third goal of the weekend at 18:22. Nichols found a way to beat Boulay with a quick tap in front of net off a pass from senior captain Kate Gustafson (Kenora, ONT). Meagan Beck (Niskayuna, NY) also assisted on the play, as Union headed into the locker rooms with a 3-2 lead after one period of play.
The Dutchwomen's steady offensive barrage continued in the second period, as freshman Suzy Pocock (Sterling Heights, MI) and sophomore Maeve Kehoe (Chelsea, QUE) each scored their second goal of the season during the middle stanza. Pocock's goal was one of two power play goals for Union, which finished 2-for-7 on man-up opportunities. Junior Molly Garrett (Hingham, MA) and Wintner teamed to assist on Pocock's mark, while Pocock and Wintner earned helpers on Kehoe's tally.Â
Sacred Heart, which went 0-for-9 on the power play Friday night, was again unable to capitalize on any of its power plays (0-for-5) and managed just 7 shots on special teams. Union totaled 17 shots on the power play.
The third period started with an early power play goal from Union's Courtney Chais (Plantation, FL) at 1:33 when she blasted home a shot from the point above Boulay's left shoulder. Kehoe assisted, as Union went up 6-2. The Pioneers would draw to within 6-3 when Panella tallied her third goal of the season at 14:13. However, Sacred Heart never managed to generate any more serious scoring threats as Zirbel thwarted just 7 of her 27 saves in the final period. Boulay made 34 stops in net in a losing effort.Â
Union, which upped its overall record to 2-4-0, now owns a 7-6-1 all-time advantage in the series with Sacred Heart (0-5-1). The Dutchwomen are off until next Friday, 7 p.m., when they travel to ECACHL newcomer Quinnipiac for league action. Union will seek to avenge a 0-3-1 showing against the Bobcats a season ago. Â
