Box Score
Union (9-6-2) scored with 1:10 left in the third period to cut into a two-goal deficit but they could not get any closer as time expired on the comeback in a 2-1 loss to Ohio State (8-6-2) at Value City Arena. The loss snapped Union's four-game unbeaten streak. The Buckeyes relied on a goal in the first and second periods to sneak past the Dutchmen. Senior Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) scored the lone Union goal on the power play for his third of the season.
Union built up momentum throughout the first period and held a 10-3 shot advantage. It was Ohio State though who registered the first goal late in the period to deal a staggering blow. Junior Dave Barton sent a pass to Sean Collins at the point from behind the Union goal. Collins settled the puck and fired a shot over the right shoulder of Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) for the 1-0 lead at 18:06.
Ohio State extended its lead to two with another late period goal in the second. Mathieu Beaudoin scored at 15:49 for his sixth goal of the season. Barton picked up his second assist of the night after retrieving the loose puck in his zone and sending it up ice on the counter-attack. Beaudoin, who beat the puck into the Union zone, skated in on goal with a Dutchmen defender on him and snuck a shot under Mayotte's pads from the right side. No offsides call was whistled on the play and the 2-0 lead stood.
With Union already on the power play late in the third period Mayotte came out of goal at 17:54 to give the Dutchmen a six-on-four advantage. They converted less than a minute later when Seney stuffed a rebound past Ohio State goalie Ian Keserich. Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) set up the play at the point with a pass down to Augie DiMarzo (West Haven, CT). His initial shot was denied by Keserich but Seney was right in front to make good on the second chance. That was the last chance Union would get as Ohio State held on for the win.
Mayotte finished with 20 saves in the loss while Keserich made 30 to pick up the win. Union held a 13-8 shot advantage in the third period and a 31-22 advantage overall.
Union will get another shot at Ohio State when the two teams faceoff tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. That game will wrap up the first half of the season for the Dutchmen.
