Box Score
Schenectady, NY (Feb. 18, 2005) The visiting Raiders knocked on the door several times in the opening period, but Union junior goaltender Dana Smullyman (Salisbury, CT) kept the game scoreless with 14 first period saves. The scoreboard lights remained dark until the 14:12 mark of the second period when Colgate captain Cheryl Setchell broke the tie with shot that skimmed just below Smullyman. From that point on it was the Raiders' quick-striking offense that was the difference as Colgate picked up a 5-1 ECACHL road win.
The Raiders added their second goal just one minute and forty-four seconds after Setchell's mark when Kara Leene put back a rebound past Union's sprawled-out netminder for a power play goal. Colgate, which surrendered just 3 shots on goal in the opening two periods of play, took a 2-0 lead into the final intermission.
The visitors continued to their torrid attack in the third when Maura Kehoe took Leene's opening third period face off and blistered Colgate's third goal to the back of net just seven seconds into the period. Teammate Amanda Barre made it 4-0 Colgate at the 15:26 mark before Union sophomore Elise Nichols (Pittsfield, MA) got the Dutchwomen on the scoreboard. Nichols, who leads the team in goals (12) and is tied for the lead in points (16), snapped a shot to back of the net off her own rebound in front of the crease for a power play goal with just over five minutes remaining in the game to make the score 4-1.
However, the Dutchwomen would get no closer as Colgate's Mallory Johnston closed out the scoring with four minutes remaining, wrapping up the visitor's 5-1 win. The Raiders held a 34-5 shot advantage for the game, and managed to kill a five-minute Union power play in the beginning of the second period.
Smullyman finished with 29 saves in net for Union. Her counterpart, Brook Wheeler, stopped four shots between the pipes for Colgate while picking up her sixth win of the season.
Union, which fell to 5-24-1 overall, 0-17-0 in ECACHL play, will seek a split in the series when they play host again to Colgate tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the Raiders, which upped their record to 14-13-3 overall, 7-7-3 in conference clashes, will look for their fourth straight win over Dutchwomen.
