CANTON, N.Y. -- Union defeated Hobart in the second match of the day today in the Liberty League men's tennis championships.
Vassar, seeded #2 in the Liberty League Men's Tennis Championship, opened the Liberty League tournament with a 4-0 win over Clarkson. Union, seeded #6, followed with a 4-2 win over #3 Hobart. Host St. Lawrence, the #4 seed, defeated #5 Rensselaer 5-1 to advance. Vassar later defeated Union, 4-2.
Union took a 2-0 lead over Hobart with wins at #2 and #3 doubles and #3 singles. Andrew Shohet and Drew Goldstein defeated Charlie Davis and Neil Patel of Hobart 8-4 at #2 doubles. Trey Minter and Tom Haynes beat Matt Jacobus and Nick Raho 8-2 at #3 to give Union a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. Shohet then won over Davis 6-2, 6-2 at #3 singles to give the Dutchmen a 2-1 lead. Hobart then earned wins at #5 and #2 singles to tie the match at 2-2. Goldstein beat Raho 6-3, 6-3 at #5 followed by Matt Silver's 7-5, 6-3 win over Minter at #2. Union retook the lead at 3-2 when Bill Goldstein defeated Derrick Moore 6-1, 6-3 at #4. Andrew Draznin then won the match for Union at #1 singles in a super-tiebreaker over Peter Pine. Draznin won the first set 7-6 (7-5) but dropped the second set 6-3. He rebounded to win the super-tiebreaker 10-8 and give Union the win.
Sunday, the Dutchmen will compete in the playoff for third place on Sunday.
