New Haven, CT – Freshman
Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, ALB) scored two goals, including one on the power play, but a back and forth battle ended in Yale's favor as Union suffered a 5-4 loss at Ingalls Rink in ECACHL action. The Dutchmen (11-10-4, 4-5-2) fought back from two goals down to take the lead in the second period on Caffaro's first strike, but the Bulldogs (6-10-2, 5-6-1) scored three goals in the third to hand Union its second straight defeat.
Union stumbled through the opening period. Yale came out and recorded its first shot on goal just 10 seconds in and later capitalized at 4:25. Defenseman Matt Cohen scored his first career goal with a low shot on the right side that deflected off the stick of goaltender
Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA). Brad Mills' initial shot on the Bulldog rush deflected off the end board and right to Cohen.
Nate Jackson scored his sixth goal of the season to make it a two-goal game at 4:14 of the second period. Joe Zappala sent a shot on goal and after Mayotte gave up the rebound, Jackson picked up the puck amidst a crowd in front and jammed it in.
A more aggressive Dutchmen team came back and scored three unanswered goals to turn its deficit into a 3-2 lead. They pressured Yale and forced them to turn the puck over which led to Union's first two goals.
Matt Cook (Belle Mead, NJ) got things started with his third goal of the season at 6:28 after Jackson passed the puck right to him in Yale's zone. Cook fired a shot from the left face-off circle and got it under the right pad of goaltender Alec Richards.
Union tied the game at 13:01 when
Scott Brady (Sutton, MA) converted off of another Jackson turnover.
Jake Schwan (Clifton Park, NY) pressured Jackson and forced him to surrender the puck at the Bulldogs blue line. Brady collected it and skated in to beat Richards on the right side.
Caffaro capped off the second period scoring with his first goal at 15:48. A shot by
Jason Visser (Mississauga, ONT) from the top of the left face-off circle sailed wide but Caffaro was at the back door for the tip-in.
Yale, who entered the game 11th in the league on the power play at 12.5 percent, scored its next two goals on the man advantage to regain the lead in the third. The Dutchmen power play, which was operating at 13.8 percent coming into tonight's game, converted on just one of seven chances. That included a five minute power play early in the first period following Yale's first goal. After two offside calls and an icing, they managed just one shot on goal during that advantage.
Yale outshot Union 33-29 and finished two-for-six on its power play with just four shots.
Mayotte (11-9-3) made 28 saves for Union while Richards (5-6-2) stopped 25 shots for the Bulldogs.
