Schenectady, N.Y. – Sophomore
Michael Beynon (Nepean, ONT) scored a power play goal early in the third period to bring Union back and earn an eventual 2-2 tie against Dartmouth at Messa Rink. It was the second straight overtime game for the Dutchmen who are now 10-8-4 overall and 3-3-2 in the ECACHL. Beynon came through with his second goal of the season and first point in seven games to help his team remain unbeaten at home through 10 games (6-0-4).
Freshman
Augie DiMarzo (West Haven, CT) dealt the initial strike for Union with his third goal of the season at 6:17 of the first period.
T.J. Fox (Oswego, NY) sent a pass in front from behind the net and DiMarzo did the rest, beating Dartmouth goalie Mike Devine with a low shot for his second point in as many games. The assist pushed Fox's point streak to three games.
Dartmouth retaliated on the power play one minute and 22 seconds later when Grant Lewis tied things at one apiece. He picked up his second goal of the season in the slot after taking a feed from Mike Ouellette and beating Union goaltender
Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA).
The Big Green broke the tie and took its first lead of the game early in the second period at 1:54. Freshman Rob Pritchard picked up a loose puck to the right of Mayotte and tucked it in. Jarrett Sampson assisted on the play with the initial shot that was turned aside by Mayotte.
Mike Harr (Norwood, MA) prevented Dartmouth from extending its lead midway through the second with a great individual effort. The freshman raced back into the Union zone following a turnover at center ice and broke up a three-man breakaway opportunity by diving in front of the puck before the Big Green's attacking trio could get set.
Beynon came back in the third period with the game-tying goal at 4:22. With under a minute left on a Union power play
Brendan Milnamow (Wilton, CT) shot the puck from between the face-off circles. His shot was blocked by a Dartmouth defenseman but trickled over to Beynon who beat Devine to the inside right post.
In the overtime session Mayotte came up with a big save at 2:36 to keep things even. He was caught going to his right to stop a shot by Nick Johnson. Teammate Eric Przepiorka redirected the puck, forcing Mayotte to reach back over to his left and knock it down before falling back and covering.
Mayotte put in another strong showing against Dartmouth, finishing with 25 saves for the second straight game. He entered the game with an all-time goals against average of 1.32 against the Big Green and a .959 save percentage. Mayotte finished with a save percentage above 90 for the 14th time this season. Union is now 10-1-3 in those games. On the other end, Devine made 19 saves.
Union held Dartmouth to just one power play goal on eight chances, a team that was seventh in the nation on the power play at 22.5% coming into this weekend.
The Big Green outshot the Dutchmen 27-21.
Union continues its four-game homestand next weekend when they host Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Up first will be Clarkson on Friday, January 13 at 7:07 p.m. That game will be televised locally on Time Warner Channel 3.
