CAMBRIDGE, MA --- Led by sophomore Olympian Sarah Vaillancourt who scored a career-high four goals, and senior forward Katie Johnston who had her first career hat trick, No. 7-ranked Harvard posted its second straight double-digit win with a 10-0 victory against Union College Sunday at the Bright Hockey Center.
Harvard, which opened its season with an 11-0 win against Rensselaer Saturday, got the only goal it would need 19 seconds after the opening faceoff. The Crimson finished with a 64-12 advantage in shots and saw 13 different players figure in the scoring.
Vaillancourt, who scored three goals in Saturday's season-opener, had a hat trick before the first minute of the second period elapsed Sunday. Johnston, meanwhile, had a pair of goals in the first period before completing her trifecta with 7:53 left in the third.
Johnston put Harvard on the board just 19 seconds into the game when she took a centering pass from Jennifer Sifers and snapped a shot past Union goaltender Alex Zirbel (Clearwater, FL). Vaillancourt followed with her first two goals to make it 3-0 before Johnston completed the first-period scoring when she struck with 31 seconds left on the clock.
Vaillancourt figured in all three second-period goals for the Crimson as she put two in the net and set up Olympian Julie Chu's third goal of the young season to help Harvard hold a 7-0 lead after 40 minutes.
Senior defenseman Lindsay Weaver made it 8-0 when her slapper from the right point got past Danielle Kimble (Reston, VA), while Weaver also had a hand in Johnston's third goal of the afternoon, which made it 9-0. Senior Liza Solley completed the scoring when she tucked Brenna McLean's feed from the right corner to the short side with 1:08 left.
The offensive performance was more than enough for sophomore goaltender Brittany Martin, who stopped 10 shots through the first two periods before yielding to junior Kristin Toretta, who made two third-period stops.
Zirbel made 11 saves in the first period, while Kimble made 43 stops in the last 40 minutes of action. The Dutchwomen fall to 2-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the ECAC Hockey League. Harvard improves to 2-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the ECACHL.
The Dutchwomen continue their six-game road trip with a pair of games at Sacred Heart on November 3 and 4.
