Hamden, CT – The Union College women's ice hockey team rattled off three second-period goals, but it was not enough to rally from a 5-1 deficit as Quinnipiac edged the Dutchwomen, 6-4, in ECAC Hockey League action Saturday afternoon.
Leading scorer
Elise Nichols (Pittsfield, MA) extended her scoring streak to four games with a pair of goals, the first coming just 16 seconds into the game to give Union a 1-0 lead.
Quinnipiac went on to score five unanswered goals, the first coming at 2:27 from Janine Duffy. Karrah Stephen gave the Bobcats a 2-1 lead midway through the period, and Ashley Jaffray and Breana Burton scored 34 seconds apart to extend Quinnipiac's lead to 4-1 at the end of the first period.
Hayley McMeekin netted her fourth goal of the season 39 seconds into the second stanza before Union mounted its comeback bid.
Brenna Malnar (Soughgate, MI) picked up her fifth goal of the season, a power-play tally, to spark the Union offense at 8:47 of the middle period. Nichols netted her second goal of the game just over six minutes later, with assists coming from
Jackie Koetteritz (Breckenridge, CO) and
Molly Garrett (Ridgely, MD).
Kelly Lannan (Winchester, MA) brought the Dutchwomen within one just over a minute later with assists coming from
Suzy Pocock (Sterling Heights, MI) and
Gabi Wintner (Calgary, ALB).
Jaffray tacked on her second goal of the game on the power play midway through the third period, sealing the win for Quinnipiac.
Alex Zirbel (Clearwater, FL) made 41 saves for Union, while Laura Brennan picked up the win in net for Quinnipiac with 22 saves.
Union (4-6-0) is off until November 25-26 when the Dutchwomen host Boston University in a pair of games at Messa Rink.
