SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior Olivier
Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) scored the game-winner midway through the third period and freshman
Jeff Christiansen (Elm Grove, WI) netted two goals to carry the Union College men's ice hockey team to a 4-3 victory over No. 14-ranked Massachusetts in non-conference action at Messa Rink on Saturday evening. The win marks the first on the season over a ranked team for the Dutchmen, who have won three-straight games for the first time in almost a year.
Bouchard poked in a pass from junior
Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) for the win at 12:27 of the third. Sophomore
Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, ALB) dumped the puck deep in the zone, and Coyle's pass from behind the net deflected off of Massachusetts goaltender Jonathan Quick's left skate. The puck bobbled around the crease before Bouchard pushed the puck between Quick's skates.
Massachusetts (6-3-1, 4-2-0 HEA) got on the scoreboard early as Matt Anderson collected a rebound from Kevin Jarman and skated the puck back out in the slot before beating Union goaltender
Justin Mrazek (Regina, SASK) low on his blocker side.
The Minutemen took a 2-0 lead with less than five minutes remaining in the first period when Jarman tipped in a shot from the blue line from Justin Braun.
Christiansen scored two power-play goals in the opening of the second period to knot the game at 2-2.
T.J. Fox's (Oswego, NY) shot from the right circle was saved by Quick, but Christiansen picked up the rebound as he came across the crease from the right corner, scoring on the glove side for his fourth goal in three games. Christiansen and Fox connected again at 5:21, this time with Christiansen chipping the puck past Quick's right. The assists extend Fox's point streak to six games.
Mark Matheson gave the Minutemen a one-goal advantage midway through the period with a power-play tally from the point that snuck by Mrazek's glove, but Coyle evened the game once again less than five minutes later. Caffaro carried the puck into the zone on the right side and passed it across to
Jason Walters (Renfrew, ONT). Walters' shot was saved, but Coyle picked up the rebound and placed the shot low past Quick's glove side.
Mrazek recorded 25 saves in his fourth win of the season, while Quick stopped 32 shots in the loss.
The Dutchmen out-shot Massachusetts, 36-28, including an 18-9 margin in the middle stanza.
Union hits the road for the next seven of eight games, starting with a four-game ECACHL road trip. The Dutchmen face Colgate on Friday, December 1, at 7 p.m. before heading to Cornell for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday, December 2.
