Bridgeport, CT  -- Three different Union players scored two goals apiece as Union tallied seven unanswered goals enroute to an 8-1 win over Sacred Heart in women's ice hockey action Saturday at the Wonderland of Ice. With the win, the Dutchwomen capture the season sweep of the Pioneers and improve to 4-4 on the season.

 

Suzy Pocock (Sterling Heights, MI), who scored six goals in the two game series, got the Dutchwomen started 3:12 into the game with a power play goal. Kelly Lannan (WInchester, MA) fed Pocock a pass in the goalmouth and she lifted the puck over a sprawled out Kristen Olychuck (Kelowna, BC) for the score.

 

The Pioneers tied the game with 3:41 left in the opening period. Sophomore Gina Arnone brought the puck down the ice and fired a shot that hit the crossbar. However, Whitney Dziama was trailing the play and picked up the loose rebound and put the puck into the net.

 

Union grabbed the lead back 3:57 into the middle period when Meghan O'Connor (Porstmouth, RI) put a shot behind Olychuck, top shelf. Brenna Melnar (Soughgate, MI) and Josie McDermott (Unadilla, NY) netted goals for the Dutchwomen in a four minute span midway through the period to make it 4-1 Union.

 

Elise Nichols (Pittsfield, MA) scored her first of two goals with 56 seconds left in the middle period. Pocock and Nichols tallied their second goals of the game in a 1:05 window early in the third period and McDermott finished things off with a power play goal halfway through the third.

 

Olychuck made 48 saves. Alex Zirbel (Clearwater, FL) needed to make only 17 saves to complete the weekend sweep for the Dutchwomen.

 

The Dutchwomen travel to Princeton and Quinnipiac next weekend to resume ECAC Hockey League play before a one week break. Face off against the Tigers is slated for 7 p.m. Friday.
