SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior guard
John Cagianello (Wethersfield, CT/Loomis Chaffee) scored a game high 34 points with four assists to lead Union to a 90-84 win over St. Lawrence in Liberty League men's basketball action at the Viniar Athletic Center Friday. The Dutchmen improve to 13-9 overall and 6-5 in the Liberty League, while the Saints fell to 10-11 and 8-3.
Cagianello made 12 of 21 shots from the floor and had his sixth 30+ point game of the season. He was two points shy of his season high. Union guard
Chris Murphy (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY/Iona Prep) added 10 points with five rebounds and four assists, and
Kyle Grimm (Sherrill, NY/Vernon Verona-Sherrill) had 11 points for the Dutchmen. Freshman
Drew Desmairis (St. James, NY/Smithtown) pulled down a team and career high nine rebounds and
Brian Scordato (Mt. Kisco, NY/Horace Greeley) added eight boards for the hosts.
St. Lawrence featured two players with double-doubles on the night. Bela Vonnak (Canajoharie, NY/Canajoharie) had 19 points with 11 rebounds, and Tom Wopperer (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) had a game high 12 rebounds with 17 points. Tyler Shaver had 18 points for the Saints. Union shot 48% for the game, and in each half, while St. Lawrence shot 59% in the first half and 53% for the night. Union led 48-41 at halftime and only committed five turnovers on the night. The Saints had a 42-31 rebounding advantage. The Dutchmen led by as many as 12 twice in the second half, including 67-55 with 11:54 remaining. But the Saints got to within three as late as 1:23 remaining on a layup by Vonnak to make it 85-82.
Union hosts Clarkson Saturday at 4 p.m. for "Take a Kid to the Game Day," and "Senior Day." St. Lawrence plays Saturday at 4 p.m. at Skidmore.
