Seney’s two-point outing leads Union over RPI, 3-2

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior Scott Seney (Silver Spring, MD) got the offense going with the first goal of the game and assisted on Union's third goal to lead them in a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Rensselaer in front of a sold out Messa Rink crowd. All five of the tallies came in the second period beginning with Seney's fifth of the season at 5:41. The Engineers held a brief lead after scoring two unanswered until the Dutchmen responded with a pair of goals 15 seconds apart to regain momentum. The win was Union's second straight as they improved to 13-11-5 overall and 6-6-3 in the ECACHL, moving them into sixth place in the league standings. Meanwhile the Engineers lost their fourth in a row, falling to 11-14-3 overall and 5-7-3 in the league.

Following a scoreless first period where shots were even at eight apiece, Union came out in the second and dealt the first blow on the power play at 5:41. Seney took a pass at the point from Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) and shot the puck through traffic to beat Rensselaer goaltender Mathias Lange on his left side. The goal was Seney's third on the power play this season and snapped a five-game scoring drought for the co-captain.

Rensselaer came back, scoring both its goals on the power play, to take a 2-1 lead at 15:22. Keith MCWilliams scored the first goal at 12:47 to tie the game with his eighth of the season. His shot from the right face-off circle beat Union goaltender Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) to the near post. Jake Lethi scored the go-ahead tally two minutes and 35 seconds later with a shot to the near post on the opposite side after taking a feed up top from Chris Hussey.

Senior Jonathan Poirier (St. Jerome, QUE) also stepped up for the Dutchmen with his first goal in three games to tie the game back up just over a minute after Rensselaer had taken the lead. Seney passed the puck over to the slot from the left side where Poirier hunted it down and flipped it past Lange.

Freshman Chris Potts (Phillipsburg, NJ) followed suit with his sixth goal of the season at 16:38 to regain the lead for Union. He picked up the puck after Rensselaer failed to clear its zone and skated in on goal to tally the game-winner. It was Potts' second straight game with a goal and third point in four games.

In the third period RPI went on the power play with 1:40 to play and pulled Lange for a six-on-four advantage. Mayotte made two key saves with traffic in front to prevent another comeback.

Despite being outshot 24-22, Union picked up its third straight win over the Engineers in the 60th meeting between the two teams.

Mayotte made 22 saves, including 12 on the power play to pick up his 13th win of the season. Lange stopped 19 shots on the other end in the loss.

The "Route 7 Rivarly" moves across town to Troy for the series finale tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. when the Dutchmen will be looking for their second straight series sweep.
