POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- Vassar's men's tennis team won a key point in doubles and captured four of six singles matches to defeat Liberty League opponent Union, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the Joss Tennis Center. With the victory, Vassar improves to 5-9 on the season, while Union falls to 4-3.
Three of Vassar's victories in singles came in straight sets, led by No. 1 singles player Erik Skartvedt who defeated Union's Andrew Draznin (Short Hills, NJ/Millburn) 7-5, 6-4. Those two could meet again next weekend when Vassar hosts the 2006 Liberty League Championships.
The Brewers captured wins at second and third doubles to start the match with a point. Union captured the first doubles match with Draznin and Trey Minter (Bronxville, NY/Bronxville). The Brewers won the first two singles matches, Union the middle two featuring Jason Leibowitz (Chappequa, NY/Horace Greeley) and DeVer Warner (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow), and VC the last two for the 5-2 victory.
Union hosts Hamilton for the final home match of the season, Wednesday, April 19 at 4 p.m.
