TROY, NY— Freshman
Mario Valery-Trabucco (Montreal, QC) scored two third-period goals and added two assists to lead the Dutchmen to a 5-0 win over Rensselaer in men's ECAC Hockey League action at Houston Field House Friday evening. The win marks the first league shutout over the Engineers and the largest margin of victory for Union over RPI in the modern era.
T.J. Fox (Oswego, NY) put Union (10-9-2, 3-6-0 ECACHL) on the board at 9:02 of the first period with his second goal in as many games. Fox chipped the puck out to
Torren Delforte (Shortsville, NY), who carried up the left it into the Rensselaer zone and slid the puck across the crease to Fox, who was trailing him in. Fox poked the puck past Rensselaer goaltender Mathias Lange for his ninth goal of the season.
Chris Potts (Phillipsburg, NJ) set up
Matt Cook (Belle Mead, NJ) with just over a minute left in the first stanza, as he sent a puck sailing high out of the Union zone up to Cook, who had reached the blue line. Cook beat an RPI defender and passed back to Potts in the slot, but Potts's slapshot was easily handled by Lange.
Delforte connected with a pass from
Mike Wakita (Kitimat, BC) at 5:40 of the middle frame for his second goal of the season. Delforte's shot from the right circle beat Lange high on the glove side.
Mike Schreiber (Sherwood Park, AB) gave the Dutchmen a three-goal cushion with his first career power-play tally at 13:33 of the second. On a four-on-three advantage, Fox took a shot from the circle, which bounced off Lange's pads out to Valery-Trabucco, whose ensuing shot hit the post and bounced out to Fox, who passed to Schreiber high in the slot. Schreiber's shot, too, hit the post, but fell into the net for the rookie's third goal of the season.
Valery-Trabucco added two goals in the third period, both on the power play. Fox carried the puck up the right side and slid the puck to Trabucco who roofed it for a 4-0 lead at 11:21.
Andrew Estey (Fredericton, NB) picked up his first career point with an assist on the play.
Michael Beynon (Nepean, ON) connected with Valery-Trabucco on a similar play with less than two minutes left to seal the game in favor of the Dutchmen at 5-0.
Junior Justin Mrazek (Regina, SK) earned his third career shutout with 24 saves and improves to 9-8-2 on the season. Lange made 20 saves and falls to 2-7-4 on the season.
Union held Rensselaer 0-for-10 on the power play to extend their perfect penalty kill streak to 193:06 over four games. The Dutchmen converted three of nine power plays on the night.
The Dutchmen, who extended their unbeaten streak against the Engineers to seven games and won for the first time in Troy since 2004, will take on Rensselaer (5-10-6, 1-5-3 ECACHL) again tomorrow night in a 7 p.m. ECACHL game at Messa Rink.
