Fox goal lifts Dutchmen to OT win over #10 Clarkson

SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore T.J. Fox (Oswego, NY) netted his 11th goal of the season just over a minute into overtime to give the Union College Dutchmen to a 2-1 upset victory over 10th-ranked Clarkson in ECAC Hockey League action at Messa Rink Saturday evening. The win marks the fourth-straight regular season win over the Golden Knights at Messa Rink, and the second for Union over a ranked opponent in Schenectady this season.

Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) set up the play with a long clearing pass to Torren Delforte (Shortsville, NY). Delforte carried the puck up the left into the zone with Fox trailing. Delforte slid a pass across the slot to Fox, who made a quick move and then sent the puck past Clarkson netminder David Leggio's right shoulder at 1:04 of the extra period. The goal marks the fourth in five games for Fox, the ECACHL's leading scorer.

Lane Caffaro (Slave Lake, AB) put the Dutchmen on the board late in the first period with a five-on-three power-play tally. Jason Walters (Renfrew, ON) passed to Fox at the right point. Fox and Caffaro traded possession at the blue line until Caffaro controlled the puck, moved in slightly and fired past Leggio for his fourth goal of the season.

Clarkson (14-6-3, 6-3-2 ECACHL) answered back less than a minute into the second frame on a five-on-three power play. Nick Dodge sent a cross-ice pass to David Cayer low in the left circle. Cayer carried the puck out toward the blue line and passed to Grant Clitsome at the point. Clitsome's shot sailed past Union goaltender Justin Mrazek (Regina, SK) low on his stick side.

Mrazek came up big throughout the second and third periods, stopping 11 Golden Knights shots in both frames, and a combined eight shots while a man down. Mrazek robbed Clarkson's Chris D'Alvise midway through the second period, sliding across the net to make a pad save on D'Alvise's one-timer at the post. Mrazek again stopped the Golden Knights with just under six minutes remaining in the final period as Matt Beca picked up an errant pass in the zone and shot at Mrazek's low left. Union's netminder made the save and then quickly covered the puck to end the Clarkson threat.

Clarkson held a 33-29 shot advantage in the game, though Union outshot the visitors, 13-10 in the opening stanza. Both teams were 1-for-6 with the man advantage.

Union (11-11-2, 4-8-0 ECACHL) hits the road for the next four games, starting with a 7 p.m. ECACHL game at Brown on Friday, January 26.
