Kyle Grimm (Sherrill, NY) added 19 with game highs of nine rebounds and four blocks as host Union defeated Mount Saint Vincent, 82-74 in the second game of the 2007 Sig Makofski Invitational Men's Basketball Tournament at Union's Viniar Athletic Center Friday night.
The Dutchmen, playing their first home game since December 9, improved to 3-6 while the Dolphins fell to 1-9. Madej made six of nine shots from the floor and
Joe Mackey (Flushing, NY) added 14 points for the Dutchmen, who shot 42% for the night. Union forced 18 turnovers, scoring 24 points off those turnovers. Union had a slight edge in rebounding, 33-32.
Junior guard/forward Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY) led the Dolphins with a game high 26 points and five rebounds, while Charlie Britz (Armonk, NY) also had five rebounds for the visitors. Mount Saint Vincent shot 50% for the game, including 59% in the second half when the Dolphins made 16 of 27 shots.
The Dutchmen led 43-29 at halftime, and led by 10 at 67-57 with 8:48 remaining in the second half. But the Dolphins went on a 12-4 run to pull to within two (71-69) with 3:04 left. Mackey made a three-pointer at 2:40 for a five-point advantage, and after Charlton made two free throws to make it 74-71 with 2:23 remaining, the Dutchmen went on a 8-0 run in the next 1:15 to pull away.
Game 1 - Bates 73, Elms 56
SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior forward Rob Stockwell (Temple, NH) had a double-double with 19 points and a game high 14 rebounds to lead #15 Bates to a 73-56 triumph over Elms in the first game of the 2007 Sig Makofski Invitational Men's Basketball Tournament at Union College's Viniar Athletic Center Friday night.
Jimmy O'Keefe (Lexington, MA) added 12 points for the Bobcats, who improved to 9-0 and are ranked #15 in the latest D3hoops.com national poll. Pat Halloran (Plymouth, NH) scored 11 points and Bryan Wholey (Marshfield, MA) added 10 in the victory. Bates shot 52% for the game, including 56% in the first half, and had a 40-31 rebounding advantage.
Junior forward Renato Lindmets (Springfield, MA) led Elms (4-5) with a game high 21 points, and had six rebounds, while Randy Hite (Hartford, CT) had a team best eight boards. John Ancrum (Harlem, NY) had eight points for the Blazers. Elms shot 40% for the night.
Bates had a 42-27 lead at the half. Halloran pulled Elms to within 10 with a three-pointer at 10:40 to make it 57-47, the closest the Blazers would get in the second half. Wholey's layup with 47 seconds remaining provided the final, the largest lead for the Bobcats in the game.
Bates had a 16-8 advantage in second chance points, and the Bobcats' bench outscored Elms' bench, 32-15.
