SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior forward Rob Stockwell (Temple, NH) had his second double-double of the tournament with 19 points and a game high 11 rebounds and was the tournament Most Valuable Player, leading #15 Bates to an 81-66 win over host Union in the championship game of the 2007 Sig Makofski Invitational Men's Basketball Tournament at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.
Pat Halloran (Plymouth, NH) and Zak Ray (Bangor, ME) were selected to the All-Tournament team for Bates, 10-0 and ranked #15 in the latest D3hoops.com poll. Halloran had a team high 20 points and Ray dished out a tourney best 11 assists along with 13 points and three steals for the Bobcats.
Union (3-7) was led by freshman guard
Nick DiMaggio (Croton-on-Hudson, NY), who scored a career and game high 31 points on 10 of 15 shooting. Senior captain
Joe Mackey (Flushing, NY) joined DiMaggio on the All-Tourney team, and scored 16 points with five rebounds.
Bates featured five players in double figures, including Bryan Wholey (Marshfield, MA), who scored 15 points, and Damon McGinn (Thetford, VT), who added 10 points. The Bobcats had a 37-29 rebounding advantage, and outscored the hosts in the paint, 30-12.
Steve Madej (Burnt Hills, NY) had a team best five assists for the Dutchmen. Bates had a 47-37 lead at halftime, but went on a 10-0 run to open up the second half in a span of 3:25. The Bobcats led by as many as 25 (66-41 with 12:01 left). Bates shot 48% for the game and Union shot 42%, while the Bobcats had 12 steals for the afternoon.
Union opens Liberty League play Tuesday night at Skidmore at 8 p.m.
ELMS 91, MOUNT SAINT VINCENT 78
Senior Bill Beauregard (Ware, MA) scored 16 points and Randy Hite (Hartford, CT) added 15 as Elms won the consolation game of the 2007 Sig Makofski Invitational Men's Basketball Tournament, 91-78 over Mount Saint Vincent at Union College's Viniar Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.
Five players scored in double figures for the Blazers (5-5), including Malakie Berry (Enfield, CT) with 14, Joe Esile (Milford, CT) with 12 and Juan Galdon (Holyoke, MA) with 10. Esile led the Blazers with eight rebounds and Hite added five assists. Elms shot 48% for the day and had a 40-34 rebounding advantage. Junior guard/forward Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY), who made the All-Tourney Team, paced Mount Saint Vincent (1-10) with game highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Kevin Garlan (Jackson Heights, NY) had five assists with 18 points. Elms led by eight at the half (47-39), and the Dolphins never got closer then seven (49-42 with 17:33 remaining). Elms scored 24 in the paint and 23 off turnovers.
