SCHENECTADY, NY – Junior captain
Matt Cook (Belle Mead, NJ) scored in the seventh period to give Team White a 4-3 victory in the Union men's hockey team's annual Garnet and White scrimmage Saturday evening at Messa Rink.
The format featured two 15-minute halves, followed by two five-minute overtimes. Following the fourth period, the teams played five-on-four for a pair of five-minute periods, with Garnet holding the advantage in the fifth frame. Still with the score tied at 3-3, the teams played four-on-four until the victory was decided. Penalty shots were awarded for all minor infractions.
Senior
Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, OH) and sophomore
Jason Walters (Renfrew, ON) connected to give Team White a 2-0 advantage in the first period. Coyle struck first after a successful draw by Walters under six minutes into the game. Walters then lit the lamp after one-timing a Coyle pass from down low through goaltender
Rich Sillery's (Hyattsville, MD) five-hole.
Team Garnet responded in the second period, knotting the score at 2-2. With 13:24 on the clock Freshman
Brock Matheson (Gananoque, ON) scored on
Justin Mrazek's (Regina, SK) stick side with a penalty shot.
Mario Valery-Trabucco (Montreal, QC) passed across the slot to Adam
Presizniuk (Calgary, AB), who passed it right back to Trabucco for a one-timer.
Mike Wakita (Kitimat, BC) gave Team Garnet a 3-2 lead in the first overtime period with a slapper from the point that made it through traffic.
Team White peppered netminder
Corey Milan (Great Barrington, MA) with five shots in the second OT, and Coyle's shot midway through the stanza ricocheted off the post and behind the freshman to knot the game at 3-3.
Cook sealed the game after neither team scored in the man-up situations and the game was forced to go to four-on-four. He took a streaking shot that was blocked by Matheson, but collected his rebound and slid it past Milan for the win.
Union opens the season with a pair of games against Ferris State on October 12 and 13 at Messa Rink. Game time both nights is set for 7 p.m.
