Colgate holds on to defeat Dutchmen, 3-1

SCHENECTADY, NY – Colgate University goaltender Mark Dekanich made 35 saves as the Raiders held on to defeat Union College, 3-1, in ECAC Hockey League action at Messa Rink Saturday evening. Union defenseman Sean Streich (Kimberley, BC) picked up the goal for the Dutchmen, who outshot the Raiders, 36-28 in the game.

Colgate (13-15-4, 7-8-3 ECACHL) registered two power-play goals in the first eight minutes of the middle frame. Nick St. Pierre tipped a Marc Fulton shot under Union netminder Justin Mrazek's (Regina, SK) right pad less than two minutes into the stanza before Jesse Winchester picked up his 15th goal of the season at 7:09 of the period. Winchester was set up just to the left of the crease and roofed a Tyler Burton pass from across the slot up over Mrazek's glove to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead.

Streich put the Dutchmen on the board late in the period with his first goal of the season. Jason Walters (Renfrew, ON) collected a pass behind the net from Mike Schreiber (Sherwood Park, AB) and skated it out to the circle. Walters passed out to Streich who placed his shot high past Dekanich at 19:22.

Union had several chances in the final period, as the Dutchmen outshot their visitors, 14-6, in the frame. Freshman Mike Wakita (Kitimat, BC) took a powerful wrist shot from just outside the Colgate zone midway through the period, but his shot clanged off the far post.

Mrazek made 25 saves, including 12 in the first period; he stands at 12-13-3 on the season. With 35 saves, Dekanich, improves to 13-13-4 on the season.

The Dutchmen, who have dropped eight straight to the Raiders, travel to the North Country for their final ECACHL regular season road games next weekend. Union faces off with Clarkson Friday at 7 p.m. in Potsdam, NY.
