Box Score SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior
Tripp Pietrak (Amherst, NY) scored two goals and assisted on another as the Union College men's soccer team won its fourth consecutive game, 6-1, over Worcester State in non-conference action at College Park Field. The Dutchmen stand at 4-0 on the season, while the Lancers drop to 2-4.
Chris Poey (Amherst, MA) opened the scoring in the fifth minute when he redirected a header from
Jon Bellock (Manchester, CT). Bellock dove to head the ball at the near post and Poey one-timed it from point-blank range for his first goal of the season.
The Lancers threatened in the 22
nd minute when senior
Eder Baptista (Pawtucket, RI) sent in a low direct kick from 18 yards out, but Union netminder
Rob Kramer (Westport, CT) made the diving save.
In the 27th minute, Poey connected with Pietrak for his second goal of the night. Pietrak beat Worcester State goaltender Albert Jenkins (Thomaston, GA) to the ball just to the right of the net. With Jenkins out of the net, Pietrak crossed the ball to Poey, who dove to head the ball into the top left corner of the net.
Pietrak registered his first goal of the night unassisted tally less than a minute later.
Sophomore
Ryan Banagan (Albany, NY) registered his first goal of the season in the 50
th minute with a low shot that rolled into the net at the far post before Pietrak tallied again in the 64
th minute. Pietrak maneuvered around several Worcester State defenders and briefly paused before netting his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Four minutes later, freshman
Chris Chiodo (Scarsdale, NY) picked up his second goal of the season. He pedaled around a defender, flipped the ball over Jenkins at about eight yards out, collected the ball again and fired into the open net.
The Lancers' tally came in the 78th minute on a penalty kick by Matt Brothers (Auburn, MA). Brothers' shot was stopped by the torso of Kramer as he dove to make the save, but the ball deflected over the junior to end the shutout.
The Dutchmen held a 25-5 shot advantage in the game, with an 11-2 lead in shots on net. Worcester State was whistled for 14 fouls to Union's five.
Kramer made two saves before giving way to freshman
Ryan Green (Santa Barbara, CA) in the 81
st minute. Jenkins stopped six shots in the first 72 minutes before being relieved by Fred Groos (Floral Park, NY); Groos made one save in just under 19 minutes of action.
The Dutchmen return to action on Saturday in a 6 pm game against Nazareth. The Lancers open MASCAC play in a 1 pm match on September 22 at Salem State.
