SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Junior tri-captain
Declan Crowley of the Union College men's soccer team was recognized as one of the top defenders in Region III with a spot on the United Soccer Coaches All-Region fourth team, the Association announced on Tuesday.
Crowley is Union's first All-Region honoree on the pitch since Salvador Lopez Jr. '20 in 2019 and the first Union defender to be recognized since Brendan Steiner '10 as a senior in 2009.
Despite not being selected to an All-Liberty League team this year, Crowley was still recognized as one of the top-14 backs in the region after starting all 19 matches and playing all but 20 minutes over those 19 games for the Garnet Chargers. He headed up a defensive unit that allowed only 18 goals, including seven shutouts and 15 games of one goal allowed or fewer. The junior also tied for third on the team with a career-high four points, scoring one goal and adding two assists.
Through his first three seasons with the Garnet Chargers, Crowley has appeared in 46 games with 27 starts, scoring two goals with three assists for seven points.
Led by Crowley and a stingy defensive unit, Union finished the season with a 7-6-6 record and its best Liberty League finish in over a decade. The Garnet Chargers advanced to the conference semifinals and recorded their fewest regular-season losses since 2015, dropping only one conference match under first-year head coach
John Ciano.
