SCHENECTADY, NY – Union College junior netminder
Lundy Day (Calgary, AB) made a career-high 46 saves in an 11-0 loss to two-time defending national champion and top-ranked Wisconsin in non-conference ice hockey action at Messa Rink Saturday evening. Day finished the weekend with 83 saves for the 0-2-0 Dutchwomen.
Meghan Duggan (Danvers, MA), Kyla Sanders (Parrish, FL), and Hilary Knight (Hanover, NH) each finished with two goals, while Angie Keseley (St. Louis Park, MN) netted a pair of goals and two assists. Emily Morris (Massena, NY) picked up four points with a goal and three helpers.
The Badgers (2-0-0) registered five goals in the first period, the first coming at 4:12 into the frame. Morris took a shot from the point that deflected off of Duggan, who was setting a screen.
Keseley gave Wisconsin a two-goal lead on the power play at 7:39 with her first goal of the season. She brought the puck into the zone and peeled off in front of the net, sliding the puck under Day.
Sanders netted a pair of scores in less than three minutes, the first coming as she carried the puck in by the left of the crease, crossed it over and flipped a backhanded shot high over Day's glove side. The second came off the draw, taken by Kelly Nash (Bonita, CA).
Knight closed out the scoring in the first frame with an even-strength tally, assited by Erika Lawler (Fitchburg, MA) and Keseley.
Union created some scoring chances late in the opening period, first from a
Marissa Gentile (Groton, MA) shot that careened off several Wisconsin defenders but halted at Badgers' netminder Alannah McCready's (Blaine, MN) stick.
Gabriela Wintner (Calgary, AB) challenged McCready again a minute later with a wrister from the point.
Morris opened the scoring less than two minutes into the middle stanza with the Badgers' second of three power-play tallies of the night; they went 3-for-5 with the extra attacker. Wisconsin added three more goals in the frame to hold a 9-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Wintner and Gentile created a two-on-one rush midway through the second period, as Wintner carried the puck up the left and passed across the slot to Gentile, but McCready handled Gentile's wrist shot.
Wisconsin extended its lead to 10 goals at 4:18 of the final period, as Nash placed a shot in the upper right of the net. The Badgers tacked on their final goal midway through the third period.
With a five-on-three advantage late in the third period, Union's
Elsa Perushek (Maple Grove, MN) had two shots, both off the faceoff. Her first was blocked by a defender, but the second was saved by a sprawling McCready.
The Dutchwomen had 14 shots on net in the game, with six coming in the final period. Wisconsin put 21 shots on net in the final frame for a game total of 57.
Day made 19 saves in the third period to finish the night with her career-best, and stands at 0-2-0 on the season. McCready registered her first career shutout with 14 saves.
Union is back in action on October 12 and 13 at Vermont. The Dutchwomen face off with the Catamounts at 7 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday.
