CANTON, N.Y. – The Union College men's hockey team won a program-record seventh consecutive game with a 3-1 win at St. Lawrence in ECAC Hockey action Friday night at Appleton Arena.
Torren Delforte (Shortsville, N.Y.) scored the game-winner to snap the Dutchmen's six-game losing streak to the Saints. Union improves to 11-8-3 and 6-3-2 in league play.
The Saints held an 8-3 shot advantage with just over four minutes remaining in the first and lit the lamp on their ninth shot, a rebound by senior Jordan Hack. Aaron Bogosian and Zach Miskovic rushed in on a two-on-one. Union netminder
Corey Milan (Great Barrington, Mass.) saved the original shot but Hack trailed behind and picked up the rebound before placing it in the top right corner of the net with Milan down.
Union had a few good chances during the frame, and
Josh Coyle (Brooklyn, Ohio) got two shots off in Union's second power-play opportunity as time wound down.
The Dutchmen kept firing in the second period, and after an early flurry of shots knotted the game on
Matt Cook's (Belle Mead, N.J.) sixth tally of the season.
Jason Walters (Renfrew, Ont.) passed out to
Mike Schreiber (Sherwood Park, Alb.) at the left point. The defenseman skated it in a little before centering to Cook in the slot for the captain to one-time at 3:33 of the middle frame.
Union had a quality chance on the penalty kill late in the period when
Mike Harr (Norwood, Mass.) blocked a pass and rushed the length of the ice with
Andrew Buote (Grande Prairie, Alb.) to his right. Harr looked to pass around a St. Lawrence defender before taking the shot, but his slapper was halted by Hallas' leg pads.
Milan saw through a screen with less than a minute remaining in the second period to stone the Saints as Shawn Fensel wound up after a lengthy cycle in the Dutchmen's zone.
Justin Pallos (Glastonbury, Conn.) took a long pass from Schreiber at the Saints' blueline and spun around with it along the boards to elude a defender. After breaking free, Pallos rushed in as Delforte crashed the net. The freshman slid the pass across the crease to Delforte who slipped it past Hallas at 6:69 for a 2-1 lead.
St. Lawrence stormed back when Alex Curran went in on a breakaway, but Milan saved the freshman's shot from the right circle and then poked his rebound attempt deep into the corner.
Walters sealed the game in favor of the Dutchmen with 1:10 left in the third period with an empty-netter.
Brendan Milnamow (Wilton, Conn.) was credited with the assist.
Milan finished with 24 saves, including 15 over the final two periods, to improve to 5-5-3 on the season. Hallas stopped 32 shots in the loss.
Union travels to #10 Clarkson Saturday for a 7 p.m. game at Cheel Arena.
